The recent social security
amendments changed the
disability provisions of that
program in three respects
according to C.A. Skinner,
manager of the Olympia office of
the Social Security
Administration.
The most important of these
changes will provide Medicare
coverage for disabled social
security beneficiaries starting in
July. Enrollment will be
automatic so that the disabled
individual need take no action to
obtain this coverage. Skinner
pointed out that Medicare will
become available only after the
disability beneficiary has been
receiving his payments for 24
months.
The waiting period for the
payment of benefits to the
disabled has been reduced from
six months to five months. Before
b enehts can be paid, Skinner
reported, the worker must have
been so disabled that he could do
no substantial gainful work for a
full five calendar months, and it
must be apparent that the
disability will last for at least a
year from the date of its onset.
The third disability change
permits the payment of social
security benefits to an individual
who became too disabled to do
any substantial gainful work
before age 22. The prior
requirement was that the
disability must have started
before age 18. These childhood
disability benefits can be paid
upon the death, retirement or
disablement of a parent.
Skinner suggested that those
wanting additional information
about the disability provisions of
social security should telephone
his office at 943-7200.

FISHING IS the chance to
wash one's soul with pure air. It
brings meekness and inspiration,
reduces our egotism, soothes our
troubles and shames our
wickedness. It is discipline in the
equality of men - for all men are
equal before fish.
