Hood Canal Junior High will
start its track season next
Thursday, April 5, with a meet
with Shelton under the lights of
Highclimber Stadium.
Coach Bill Bryant has several
lettermen back this year, and he
says his team looks strong in the
weight and hurdle events.
One of the main reasons for
the strength in the weight events
is Jeff Pill, the state record-holder
in the shot. So far this season Pill
has already exceeded his state
record with a toss of nearly 62
feet. Rick Blanchard and Mike
Simmons also help to give Hood
Canal strength in the weight
events.

TOM NOREEN, left, and John Teberg finish the first mile of the
race in the intersquad meet.
By JOHN BOGGS
The Shelton High School
track team held its annual
intersquad meet last week and the
surprising sophomores edged the
seniors for the win. The
sophomores rolled up 69½ points
to the seniors' 65½, while the
juniors trailed with 48.
The meet saw several fine
performances and personal bests.
Sophomore Marty Settle was a
double winner in the tO0 and 220
and ran a leg of the winning 880
relay team. Settle's time in the
220, 23.6, established a new
sophomore record.
Another sophomore, Todd
Brewer, ran an outstanding race in
the two mile. Brewer ran a 5:17
first mile and finished with a fine
early-season time of 10:42.
Senior Barry Gesche won the
triple jump with a fine jump of 40
feet, another personal best.
The track team is currently
trying to fight off the flu and get
ready for the opening meet with
Elma tonight under the lights at
Highclimber Stadium. Several
people were out last week with
the flu, but most were back in
school this week. Tonight's meet
will start with the field events at
6:30. Running events will follow
at 6:50.
