By STEVE PATCH decades of Red & Black hardcourt
What's another month's delay
the or high-tops have been
in the closet for a year
&eady?
Such was the apparent thinking
when a slew of stars of
showed up all the same
Climberville's fourth annual
Basketball
postponed from its usual
last month on account of a
nflict with the current Climbers'
ate-playoff hopes.
Indeed, nearly three dozen
raade an appearance - some of
them with skills notably intact,
me with, well, huge grins none-
theless.
"It looked like everyone had fun
usual, concurs veteran coordi-
McGuire, adding that
ate the crowd at 250 or
a0, down a little from years past
s but not bad considering
postponement and all.
The Citizens for Shelton Schools'
fnd-raiser had a special honoree
time, by the way. Recognized
his long contribution to sports
our youth here in Shelton,
was Reunion co-facilitator Oz
Johnston.
AS FOR THE featured alums,
they represented more than four
excitement.
From the Sixties were Laurie
Somers, Jerry Bloomfield, Wayne
Carlson, John Orr and Denny
Temple.
From the Seventies: Chris Mc-
Gee, David Sutton, John Vernon,
Larry Olli, Mark Tuson, Rick En-
dicott, Terry Dion, Todd Young,
Rocky Nutt and Pat Rhodes.
Representing the Eighties were
Rob Endicott, Sterling Stock, Scott
Eichhorn, Dean McCoy, Mark
Ziegler, Bryan Gregg, Tad Smith,
Rusty Gigstead, Scott "Scooter"
Craig, Rob Coleman, Leo Blakley,
John McGee and Dan Rodius.
And from the past 15 years were
Matt Bogh, Kelly (Bingham) Bogh,
Leanne Gunter, John Wallwork,
Nathan Rains, Ingrid Rains, Liz
(deWaalMalefyt) Canright, Chris-
tina Vernon, Kristi Cochran and
Derek Blakley along with Climber
soon-to-be-grads Curtis Trondsen,
Charlie Vernon and Brett Riley.
At the rival helms, reprising
their celebrated coaching partner-
ship from the Seventies and Eight-
ies here, were Terry Gregg and
Harlan Buitenveld.
And serving as referees were
former Climbers Terry Dion and
John Vernon along with long-time
Climber hoop coach Mark Jensen.
{00limber track & field:
anes finds,, nemesis,,
state discus chase
Climber junior Jacob Hanes
and lost the state lead
the discus in the span of four
last week as track & field
up early-season momen-
with a pair of meets.
The Climbers' all-league
flipped the
a state-leading 162-3 in
7's dual-meet victory
Wer host North Thurston only
to learn four days later, while
:g in the annual
Relays, that a fella
likewise 3A West Valley
Yakima had taken over his
by way of a 169-11 throw
same day elsewhere.
"So now he's #2 in the state,"
lays John Sells, the Climbers'
eteran weight-events coach
tad track historian nonpariel.
• SO A REAL battle is in the
is it, come May's state
"Maybe," says Sells. "This
has athletic tools that
does not have. That is to
he's as fast and coordinat-
as Hanes but he's about a
a foot taller and 30 pounds
"So, if this guy takes off and
up around 180, then it's
be tough. But, if not,
is a great competitor,
he'll be in there."
Just the fact that Jacob's in
low 160s already - within
distance of Shelton's
record of 181-3 set by
tw collegiate All-American
'He's about
half a foot
taller and
30 pounds
heavier.'
Nick Owens - is most encour-
aging all by itself, adds Sells.
'Yeah, that's very good. Very
good," he says. "And he went
150 at the Bremerton Relays in
a downpour. It was a miserable
day. Gosh, what a miserable
meet!"
ALSO DISTINGUISHING
himself there in navy town,
notes Sells, was team new-
comer Derek Ranney, he of the
Climber basketball celebrity.
"He had a 19-9 jump, which
is pretty good for a first-year
guy," says Sells.
Another notable first-timer,
collegiate-gridder-to-be Gabe
Shoemaker - aka the 52-foot
shotputter who joins his friend
Hanes in the hunt for a state
title this spring, missed Sat-
urday's meet, occupied as he
was otherwise with a scholastic
event in our nation's capital.
"So we finished third in the
shot and discus relays, which
we would have won by quite
a bit if he'd have been there,"
says Sells. "But that's the way
it goes..."

EAR-SPANNERS GALORE mark the occasion as expected Friday night as
Climberville hosts its fourth annual Old-Timer's/Alumni Basketball Reunion
in the Minidome. Enjoying their teammates' travails during a stint on the
bench, near, are alums (from left) John Wallwork, David Sutton, Chris McGee
and Mark Tuson. Beaming upon introduction alongside '88 grad John McGee,
inset near, is legendary ex coach Terry Gregg, and recalling glory days gone by
in the upper inset are (from left) Kelly (Bingham) Bogh, Leo Blakley, Kristi
Cochran, Mark Ziegler and the younger McGee. Barely visible in the back-
ground is Seventies' star Scott "Scooter" Craig, whose other claim to fame is
winning both the 100 and 200 state sprint titles his senior year here. He's the
only Highclimber ever to win a state-meet double.
Pat Penoyar 15th at nationals
Shelton's Pat Penoyar marked his first trip to college
swimmings NCAA Division I nationals this month by
placing 15th overall in the 200-yard breaststroke event.
The '04 Climber grad and prep All-American touched
in 1:57.08 to earn All-American honorable mention as a
junior transfer at perennial power Indiana University.
The six-five, 215-pound exClimber, who had won the
state breaststroke championship as a senior here and
swam for the Huskies at the University of Washington
prior to moving up to the Hoosiers' program this past
fall, qualified for his maiden trip to nationals by turning
in a career-best 1:56.75 performance for second place in
his specialty in the Big Ten Championships last month
in Columbus, Ohio.
And shortly before that the Climber grad learned he
had been named to the All-Big-Ten second team by vote
of the conference's head coaches.
Pat is the son of Chris and Becky Penoyar of Shelton.
State breaststroke champion here his senior year, he
helped the Climbers win a state medley relay title that
season as well.
ExClimber Pat Penoyar
ExClimber Aaron All.American
Shelton's Aaron Sawyer has been named an NAIA
second-team All-American in collegiate basketball.
An honorable mention the past two seasons, the
6-8 senior center for Northwest University of Kirkland
joined the second-team elite last week after leading the
Eagles to their first-ever national tournament, where
they made it to the final four and ended up 27-9.
The '03 Climber grad finished the season with team
highs in scoring (17.2 points per game), rebounding (8.2
average) and shot blocks (36), and he also had 44 steals.
Aaron is now Northwest's all-time leading scorer,
having finished his four-year Eagle career with 2,059
points and 922 rebounds while shooting 51.6 percent
from two-point range and 43 percent from beyond the
three-point line.
In addition, the Climber grad was named to the
NAIA national championship all-tournament team last
week, just days after holding Cornerstone All-American
John Jonkers - who'd been averaging 19 points and
nine rebounds - to three points and eight boards in the
quarterfinals. Aaron Sawyer
