You're OUTTA there!"
After opening debacle:
SENIOR JEFF HOLLOWAY pulls off the textbook plate-blocking put-
out at home last week while Climber teammate Tristin Richerson looks
on approvingly from the mound. Yes, Thurston's would-be scorer is
• indeed seen trying to pick the ball out of the Climber catcher's mitt in
the nearmost shot - seconds after being called out. Alas, the visiting
Rams went on to win 15-4 nonetheless and spoil the Climbers' season
opener. Shelton's boys rebounded the next night, though - still losing
but not before holding the heavily favored Rams to just one run through
five and a half innings.
SHS bats get
the message
By STEVE PATCH
The boys of Climber baseball
settled for moral victory last week
following an opening-day perfor-
mance best forgotten.
Given a choice between jut-
jawed repetition and a fresh
start, the Climbers went with the
latter in the wake of their March
20 home-field debacle at the hands
of North Thurston and wound up
with a one-run nailbiter through
five and a half innings against the
same Rams on Thurston turf the
next night.
Yes, their hosts eventually pre-
vailed - by a 5-0 count - but not
before the Climbers satisfied their
brand-new head coach that they'd
.... indeed gotten his message.
"They found out what they're
capable of," says Don Daniels,
assuring that almost nothing
they'd done in the previous night's
4-15 embarrassment qualified as
such.
THAT GAME'S shortcomings
pretty much ran the gamut, as
Coach Daniels tells it. Not only did
his Climbers lose mental focus and
cease to execute the fundamentals,
he says, but they resorted to chip-
ping away at the officiating and
thus further eroding their concen-
tration.
That they got his postgame mes-
sage to the effect that such was
not the way to play the game, adds
Coach, was apparent all through
Wednesday's Game Two, but espe-
cially so during the first five and
a half frames, when the Climbers
held their favored hosts to just the
lone first-inning run.
The Rams put it away with four
in the home half of the sixth, but
even so it was a most encouraging
performance, says Daniels.
ON THE MOUND for the
Climbers there in Thurston was
sophomore veteran Jacob Dun-
nington. He worked five innings
before giving way to relief and al-
lowed just three hits and two runs.
He scattered seven walks and
struck out two.
Backing him up at the plate
that night were junior veter
Jordan Linnell (two for three with
two stolen bases), sophomore vett
eran Alex Okonek (one for three)
and upstart ninth-grader Tyle:
Dunnington (one for two with I
double).
Perennial all-leaguer Tristi
Richerson was on the mound for
the Climbers in their opener. The
veteran senior lasted four innin
chased by the eight-run damage
caused chiefly by wildness (nine
walks). He allowed three hits and
struck out four.
THE HOSTS HAD six hits i
that outing. Jacob Dunningto
went two for four with a double,
He scored once and drove in a
run as well. Linnell went one for
three with an rbi and stole a base.
Richerson helped himself with a
rbi double and a stolen base, and
Okonek and senior veteran Dea
Bearden both went one for two
Alex accounting for two runs
Dean doing his damage by way of
a double.
In the wake of subsequent rai"
outs the Climbers were slated to
play at home today and Friday,
Both opponents are nonleague,
Action starts at 3:45 on High"
climber Field.
