00hind Carissa's 15-K performance:
on
a gem
The girls of Climber fast-
pitch found their stride in rainy
Lyons Park last Friday, riding ace
Carissa Krumpols' 15-strikeout
pitching gem to a 14-5 victory over
nonleague host Bremerton.
: Their first victory of the sea-
son after a pair of nonleague
losses, it found veteran coach Val
James waxing near ecstatic at the
apparent arrival of a team she'd
been touting as something very
special indeed since the end of
last season.
"Yeah, this is what we've been
working for for a year," she in-
toned.
And what a breakout it proved
to be, too. Not only did veteran ju-
nior Carissa strike out 15 batters
while issuing just one walk the en-
tire seven innings, but her offense
backed her to the tune of fully 15
hits.
Ms. Krumpols had a big part in
as well, as it happens.
She had three hits in four at-bats
and drove in three of the Climbers'
14 runs.
"That was definitely her best
game ever," said Coach, noting that
Carissa's pitching performance for
the ages was the direct result of
her being "really focused."
Complementing the ubiquitous
K at the plate were junior
CarrieAnne Allegri (three hits,
three rbi, one base on balls and
one stolen base), classmate and
leadoff hitter Courtney Johnson
(three hits, three stolen bases and
two walks), junior Kayla Strong
(two hits), sophomore Ali Lund (a
hit and two runs batted in), senior
transfer Nikki Robinson (an rbi
hit), sophomore Annie Johnson
(two stolen bases and three walks)
and upstart ninth-graders Emily
Worf and Chelsey Hannah (with
a base hit apiece).
"This group has maybe more
fight and more spirit - and more
personality - than any team I've
ever had," said James, who's joined
once again at the coaching helm by
veteran assistant Scotti Crump.
The Climbers resumed play
Tuesday night against league
frontrunner Lakes at MCRA. Re-
sults of that game will be in next
week's Journal.
