tor in The Ladies of the Camellias.
Nelson takes stage
in a Ladies com(',av
Mari Nelson of Shelton is
pearing as Italian actress
eanora Duse in an Olympia
Production of The Ladies of the
Camellias, a comic play by Lil-
lian Groag.
The play is about the meet-
lag of Duse and another super-
Star of' the 19th Century stage,
Sarah Bernhardt. Both were
famous for their portrayals of
Popular heroines of the time
and each thought she gave the
best performance of the dying
Marguerite in La Dame aux
Camilias, a play by Alexander
Dumas.
Burnhart has her own the-
ater in Paris which she opens
up to Duse and company for
their production of La Dame,
but things go awry when a Rus-
sian anarchist takes the women
hostage.
Nelson is joined on stage by
Rebecca Wood, Jason Haws and
others. The comedy is being
staged by Harlequin Produc-
tions at the State Theater, 202
Fourth Avenue East in Olym-
pia. Pertbrmances are at 8 p.m.
on March 29, 30 and 31. Tickets

Woman says loose
dogs are not at fault
Jane McBride has been talk-
ing to the Mason County Com-
aission about her frustrations
With animals, particularly dogs,
rUnning loose on her property.
Last week she described seeing
Pit bulls and big black dogs fre-
quent her property, bark loudly
and generally scare her and her
rnily. Because of these roam-

"These animals scare us and
Our neighbors don't do anything
about it," she said on March 20.

peace and privacy isn't just re-
cent and has been going on for
16 years. "We just have to stop
it," she said.
McBride said she has dis-
cussed this matter with the Ma-
son County Sheriff Office and
was told her family could shoot
the animals if they tel threat-
ened. "We don't want to shoot
the animals. It's not their fault,"
she said. "It's the fault of the
owners for not controlling their
animals."
She appeared again before the
commissioners on Tuesday, this
time presenting a signed petition
to keep dogs in the county either
on leashes or within the bound-
aries of their owners' property,
instead of roaming freely around
the county.
Commissioner Lynda Ring-
Erickson asked Betty Wing, the
county's director of central op-
erations, to make sure to involve
McBride in an upcoming meet-
ing to examine current laws re-
garding dogs and decide whether
they just need to better enforce
what's current or make changes.

Madrigal moments:
Chamber Singers will perform
The Shelton High School
Chamber Singers are prepar-
ing a Renaissance-style event to
be held at the Colonial House in
downtown Shelton next month.
Entitled, "Ah Primavera!," the
program will include a full-length
concert of songs and Renaissance
madrigals, theatrical skits, in-
strumental music and dessert.
"Ah Primavera!" will be held on
two consecutive weekends, April
13-14 and April 20-21. Perfor-
mances will run from 7 to 9:30
each evening.
The Chamber Singers are a
16-voice auditioned choir under
the direction of Paul Nakhla, who
teaches choral music at SHS and
Oakland Bay Junior High School.
Nakhla comes to Shelton with a
master's degree in vocal perfor-
mance from the University of
Washington. He previously taught
music at South Puget Sound Com-
munity College in Olympia.
"This is the first of what we
hope will become an annual com-
munity event in Shelton," he said.
Nakhla hopes to bring more cho-
ral music to Shelton. "This cham-
ber choir is performing complex
music at a high level. I hope that
'Ah Primavera!' reaches music
lovers outside of the schools and
adds to Shelton's musical life."
The Chamber Singers were
honored earlier in the school year
by being invited to sing at the
State Capitol in Olympia in No-
vember and by special invitation
of Governor Gregoire, at the Gov-
ernor's Mansion in December.
Tickets for "Ah Primaverat" are
now available for $15. Proceeds
will benefit the choral music pro-
gram at Shelton High School. For
tickets or more information, send
an e-mail to pnakhla@shelton-
schools.org or call Nakhla at
432-2136.
