Shelton High School
track and field showed the
depth in their boys and
girls teams after compet-
ing in a four-school meet
on Thursday at Gig Harbor
High School.
The Shelton boys team
finished first with 106.5
points, with Gig Harbor in
second with 106.
The boys first place fin-
ish was the first time in
school history that Shelton
defeated Gig Harbor in any
track and field meet.
"This win really helps to
fuel the momentum we are
trying to build as the season
moves along," said Shelton
head coach Doug Sells.
Juniors Indi Endicott
and Bryten Rodgers fin-
ished first and second
respectively in the boys
110-meter hurdles.
Sells said both Endi-
cott and Rodgers are com-
petitors in the 4A Narrows
League, but are more likely
to advance to district in
other events - Endicott in
the boys 300-meter hurdles
and Rodgers in the boys
pole vault.
"If they wish to compote
in the Narrows League
Championship meet for a
spot in the 4A West Cen-
tral district meet, they
will have to improve their
times, which I fully expect
them to do," Sells said.
Rodgers improved his
personal best in the boys
pole vault by clearing 12
feet and seven inches (pre-
vious personal record was
12 feet).
Sells said Rodgers has
put himself ahead of all
his league competitors and
could be a contender at dis-
tricts.
"He's focused and ex-
tremely enthusiastic when
it comes to the vault," Sells
said.
The Shelton coach said
there were a few athletes
that were the key factors in
the boys team's win over Gig
Harbor - Tre Fisher (high
jump), Cody Tarver (shot
put), Endic0tt (300:meter
hurdles) and Roman Hurst
(triple jump).
"These athletes really
stepped up and made things
happen," Sells said.
The Lady Highclimbers
track and field team fin-
ished second with 73 team
points, while Gig Harbor
had 121.
In the girls 200 meter
dash, Shelton sophomore
Kasey Burbridge won with
a time of 28.11 seconds, fol-
lowed by freshman Natalie
Andrewski's 28.44.
"If they continue to im-
prove, Shelton may be able
to put together a competi-
tive girls 4x100 meter relay
for the league champion-
ship meet," Sells said.
Along with other young
sprinters (Kandyce Bragg,
Madison Striplin, Michael
Striplin, Jameson Knight
and Ky!e Bonita), Sells is
hoping seniors Ryan Adams
and Brenna Thompson can
be in top form for successful
sprint relay teams in the
league championships.

Shelton crushed
by Oly's offense
in league loss
By DEAN SIEMON
Shelton High School baseball suffered two tough
4A Narrows League losses after the split with Bel-
larmine Preparatory School.
ARer a 16-4 loss hosting Olympia High School
on March 23, the Highclimbers (1-5, 1-4 4A Nar-
rows League) lost at Olympia (4-2, 3-0 4A Narrows
League), 12-1 after five innings in a mercy-rule
shortened game.
David Gorman started the game but lasted only
three and two-thirds innings, allowing eight earned
runs on four hits and six walks.
Gorman said he expected to rely on his defenese
after the Bears scored 16 rkm~ on teammate Brad
Bearden on March 23.
"I came into the game expecting to them to hit the
ball against me," Gorman said. "I had to rely on my
defense."
Olympia had 10 total hits, scoring three runs in
the third inning after trailing 1-0. The Bears would
add five runs in the fourth and score four runs in the
fifth as the official's called the game due to the 10-
run mercy rule.
After four walks to open up the fourth inning,
which scored one run, Gorman threw a wild pitch
that allowed another run to score. Olympia's Cole
Loncar hit a two RBI double.
Gorman said there were injuries that forced de-
fensive adjustments, which led to Joe Strand, the
normal Shelton catcher, to center field and Anthony
McLeod to the catcher position.
But despite the struggles against Olympia, Got-
man said the team is still stronger on the defensive
side than the last few seasons.
"We actually trust each other to make plays," Gor-
man said. "This year, we all know each other better."
The top three batters in Shelton's lineup combined
for six of the Highclimbers' seven hits.
Strand went three for three with an RBI single in
the first inning that drove in Aaron Roaf, who had a
double to leadoffthe game.
Roar went two4"or three, while James Dickson and

Bulldogs get key hits in win
By DEAN SIEMON
With home runs from seniors Kasey Bielec and M.J. McDon-
nell at their ballpark, the North Mason High School baseball
team earned a key 1A/2A/3A Olympic League win on Thursday
over North Kitsap High School, 9-8.
The Bulldogs (2-3, 2-1 Olympic League) outhit the Vikings
(3-2, 2-1 Olympic League) 13-8 in the gamd and both teams each
had two home runs.
But North Mason head coach Bill Geyer said the big reason
for the win at home was taking advantage of having runners on
the bases.
"The difference in us having the same number of home runs
is that we had seven RBI and they had three," Geyer said. "Got
to get on base and let the big boys do their job."
