He joined a 14-month old brother, Brian and a five year old sister, Shelia. Proud new parents are Bob and Elaine Ireland of Shelton. While room and the new baby were relaxing and being well cared for at the hospital, Grandma Claire Wingert took Brian and Shelia to the island for a vacation with Grandma. However, as soon as Elaine and the baby were on their way home so was Shelia to lend Mommy a mighty big helping hand around the house and with the new arrival to save her lots of steps. A group of gals will be thoroughly enjoying themselves today as they journey to Olympia for the Women's Club's Annual Spring Outing. They will lunch at the Jacaranda. The Community Club will hold a regular meeting in April, this is a bit of a change from the usual. For this month would normally be when they would be having a potluck dinner. After the meeting card playing will follow. The Chuck Bridges headed for Raymond last Saturday with five mouths watering due to oodles of over-worked taste buds. This because the Willapa Saddle Club's Crab Feed is an annual affair and they always have 365 days to work up an appetite for the next one. Sunday they called on Chuck's brother, Ted and his family at North River. Chuck's mother, Mrs. Charles Bridges also lives next door to Ted so they tucked her in and brought her home for a visit. Jewel (Pinard) Doering paid this reporter an unexpected visit a week ago Tuesday, along with her three youngsters. She came prepared with a picnic lunch so that we could all spend the afternoon prowling around her old childhood stomping ground at Pt. Wilson. Later when she headed for home in Tacoma she and the small-fry seemed thoroughly contented. Two young fellas really kept Grandpa Baunsgard hooping most of last week as they enjoyed their mutual spring vacations here on the Island. Visiting here at the Sid Baunsgard home last week were Scoot Shera and Rick Burkhalter. Both their parents and the rest of the family came down over the weekend. Sunday the group celebrated two birthdays, Grandpa Sid's birthday, March 30 lans and granddaughter, Sidney's 15th birthday, March 28. Spending three days here last week at the Bud Glaser home at Ballow were Gladys and Fat Middlestetter of Sedro-Woolley. Accompanying the couple were their daughter, Rita Haskew and her three boys, Cory, Craig and Calvin and Rita's brother, Dennis and a friend, Bud. The Middlestetters dropped in for a visit with the Glen Yates family one evening. Thursday Cleo Somers and her four youngsters paid the Dale Peughs a surprise visit. Lila and Cleo's two girls joined Carmen and children and Mirja Bridges and two of her children for a delightful afternoon of swimming at the Craft's pool at the Hole-in-the-Wall. Sunday the Stan Yates got up bright and early to head for a family get-together in Snoqualmie. Their daughter, Thelma and her husband, Luther came down on Saturday to borrow her brother, Glenn's big truck to use to move the items they had had stored in Yates barn for some time to the house they recently moved into in the Tukwila area south of Seattle. Carol Bengelsdorf dropped in Thursday evening for a two day visit with the Glenn Yates and Dale Peugh families. After she arrived she, your reporter and our four small-fry made a spur of the moment plan to go to the ocean to take advantage of a good clam tide. They all enjoyed a wonderful trip and good weather but sure got skunked clam-wise, three to be exact. The next day they used their own backyard to dig each family a mess of steamers and enough horse clams for some chowder. Dot Smith attended the wedding Sunday of Dan Knauf and his bride, Peg Johnson. Dan's folks, the Dick Knaufs were Islanders a number of years ago when Dan were merely a pitter-patter of footsteps, first in the original part of the house the Jim McAuliffes have remodeled and made an addition to and then later at the house now owned by Gert Zigler behind Gene Seward and Helen Lammer homes. Perhaps most readers by this time have heard that Dot Smith has sold her place. Within the next few months she is planning on purchasing a mobile home and moving somewhere on the northend of the Island. Now here as promised is a rundown of the travels and doings ring of John and Beulah Hitchcock during the past three months. The John Hitchcocks returned this week after spending three months in Arizona and report a wonderful winter vacation despite unusually colder weather than is normal for that area, though most days were sunny. Leaving Des Moines early Christmas morning they were accompanied by their daughter, Pauline and her children Randy and Melanie. A stop was made in Jefferson Ore., for a short visit with relatives and the first night was spent in Roseburg with Beulah's sister. Irt a few days they entered Death Valley in a great dust storm-luckily the next day was calm so several days were spent seeing the many attractions They enjoyed New Year's dinner at Furnace Creek Ranch, then drove to Las Vegas where Pauline and the children caught a bus for home while John and Beulah headed on south to Quartzsite and Crystal Hill, where they met the rock Caravan consisting of twelve Campers of various shapes and sizes Jan. 8 the Caravan headed out for a month of primitive camping on the high desert, covering much ground between the California and New Mexico borders. Long evenings were spent 'round a huge camp fire where there was singing, story telling and star gazing. Rocks of all kinds were hunted during the long, lazy days and early evening found everyone preparing some article of food in the campfire ashes. Chickens, hobo dinners, steaks, potatoes, onions, carrots, apples, grapefruit, biscuits, and corn bread were done to perfection in this fashion. When the Caravan broke up, the Hitchcocks headed farther south visiting Chiricahua National Monument, also the town of Tombstone where much history of the west was made and is kept alive by museums, historamas and entertainment to draw the tourists. As usual time was spent at Organ Pipe Cactus Monument, a lovely spot on the Mexican border. More time was used up at Imperial Dam north of Yuma, where the spring flowers covering the desert floor were most beautiful. Finally, Boulder City, Nev., was made headquarters for a couple of weeks, where several of the beautifully landscaped camp grounds of the Lake Mead recreational area were visited and a boat trip to Hoover Dam was enjoyed. They traveled north l on 95 and are-glad to be back home on good old Harstine. Arriving Thursday to spend part of their spring vacation with the Hitchcocks were daughter, Pauline and the grandchildren, Randy and Melaine of Des Moines, and Janel and Sharyl of Olympia. On Easter Sunday son, Lyle and his wife, Marlene accompanied by her folks the Roscoe Pages drove to the Island. Other visitors at the Hitchcock home since their return included the Roy Whaleys of Shelton and her mother, Mrs. Fisk of Boise, Ida. Also Les and Vi Johnson and sons of Olympia dropped by one evening. Easter weekend visitors at the Phil Rogers home included Phil's son, Chuck and his son, Mike and wife, Susie of Klamath Fails, Ore. They all enjoyed the two or three days together and the bundle of white fur otherwise known as Randy had someone else to roughhouse and play with for a day or so. If an automobile turns without a signal, or if the wrong signal is used, it could be a tip-off to a drunk behind the wheel. Sober drivers who observe such signal failure should give the potential killer a wide berth.
