Barred Owl
The Barred Owl (Strix varia) * is
also known as a-Hoot Owl due to its
vocalizations.
The name Barred Owl comes from the
fact that they have bars of coloing on
their chests.
This photo was taken in my backyard
a couple of years ago. '
Owls are in the category of birds known
as raptors. Raptors are birds of prey, ~
meaning that they prey upon small
animals for their food source. Their
diet may include mice, shrews, rats, ‘
squirrels, rabbits, and even opossums
and weasels.
They have been known to attack
domestic cats.
Although they are native to eastern
North America, they have expanded
their range to include the west coast.
An ORNITHOLOGIST is a person who studies birds or who is an expert on.
birds. Have you ever
considered being a scientist? It’s not all test tubes. and lab coats.

Some scientists love their jobs because they get to study nature and work
outdoors. For centuries
scientists and medical doctors have used the'Latin Language* to
describe and classify all manner
of things in the natural world.
