:attle lice can be controlled County
Cattle lice, more of a problem
in the winter, can be controlled
with a little effort, says Harold
Van De Riet, county extension
agent, and he has some
Washington State University
publications that can help.
"The situation is common
among most herds in the winter
and spring," says Van De Rim,
"because low light levels and
cooler temperatures promote
development. Entomologists say
the cattle-biting louse is flat,
reddish brown and about a tenth
of an inch hmg. They move
actively. They keep beef cattle
from making maxinmm weight
gains and heavy infestations can
reduce production of dairy cattle
by 10 percent or more."
A number of insecticides are
effective and your choice may
depend on whether you are
treating beef animals or lactating
dairy animals. Sprays, dips, dusts
and rubbing devices are available.
Two publications giving more
information are USDA L. 456
entitled, "Cattle Lice: How to
Control Them," and WSU
publication EM 3308, called
"Control of Insect and Mite Pests
of Man, Livestock and Poultry."
This WSU publication is revised
each year, says Van De Riet, but
the cattle louse recommendations
for 1973 are unchanged from
1972.
Mason County sales of U.S.
Savings Bonds in February totaled
$25,184, it was announced this
week by Harry C. James, county
chairman.
