Musical sisters do Mama 'proud ANA AND KATHRYN Dozi- er-Quine are Mama's Pride, one of the acts at this year's Fiddle Fest. Two teens will make the scene with some Mama moments when musicians affiliated with the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association stage the 22nd annual Fiddle Fest this weekend. Ana and Kathryn Dozier-Quine are sisters, ages 16 and 13, who will be giving their first perfor- mance in Shelton. They have been playing, singing and entertaining since they were 3 and 4 years old. They perform at retirement homes, retirement parties, luaus, private parties, lodge parties and charity events. Their program in- cludes Irish music as well as gos- pel, bluegrass and old-time coun- try. They have appeared three times at the Seattle Folkliib Fes- tival, five times at Yakima's Folk Festival and at community festi- vals in Union Gap and Sunnyside. As the result of her suffering from cancer at a very young age, Aria has an artificial eye. Her mother was told she would have a number of disabilities, especially with reading because of her inabil- ity to scan. She put her daughter in piano lessons to teach her to read music and dancing classes to develop her coordination. Aria at- tended public school through the second grade and has been home- schooled since then. WHEN KATHRYN was 5, she started piano, then guitar, being jealous of her older sister. They began playing as a duo almost im- mediately and performed in con- tests and at a number of fairs. It was at one of these contests that they were told they needed to have a name for their group. Their morn DeAnna happened to be close by and blurted out "Mama's Pride." The name stuck, and they have continued to be known as Mama's Pride. Both girls play about 20 different instruments, including fiddle and guitar, and are proud members of the Washington Old Time Fiddlers Association. They will both be entering the Running Start program at Yakima Valley Community College in the fall. Three shows are planned for the 22nd annual festival Friday and Saturday, April 6-7, in the Shel- ton High School Auditorium, 3737 North Shelton Springs Road. Acts scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, April 6, are Mama's Pride, country-music singer Chris Guen- ther, Katie Keller on fiddle, Fred Crabtree on vocals and harmonica, J.P. Wittman on fiddle, Jeff An- derson on fiddle, Cindy and Steve Johnson on fiddle and vocals, bluegrass music of Hard Tack Honey, Marina Gittins on Andrew Kimball on fiddle, Bakke on guitar, Tyler Hagood fiddle and Barbara Collins and Ramsey on fiddle.
