Youth help Habitat in clean-up event A youth group from St. Edward's Catholic Church in Shelton gave a helping hand to Habitat for Hu- manity of Mason County and Habitat homeowners in Spencer Glen by helping with clean up and garden- ing on March 24. The 13 youth group members, along with other Habitat volunteers, Habitat homeowners and Spencer Glen neighbors worked on the community project to weed, pick up and remove trash, spread bark mulch provided by PUD 3, pull scotch broom with pullers provided by WSU extension office and built a set of stairs for one homeowner with supplies donated by Mitchell Lum- ber. "We and the homeown- ers are very grateful for their help" said Michele Palomino, volunteer co- ordinator for Habitat for Humanity. "Habitat is eager to provide student volunteers the opportu- nity to learn about our mission while giving back. These students are our fu- ture volunteers and com- munity leaders who are learning the importance of improving housing, which improves their commu- nity." This project was done in conjunction with Habitat's A Brush with Kindness program -- a home repair and preservation program for low-income homeown- ers. Habitat hopes to add more neighborhood clean- ups throughout Mason County with the help of Habitat homeowners and volunteers. "Seeing how the ho- meowners beamed with pride at their spruced up yards and seeing neigh- bors working alongside each other, made i~he day worthwhile," said Bret Barrish, family support chair for Habitat for Hu- manity. "It had a roll- ing effect throughout the area. As the day progressed we had more homeown- ers start working in their yard or offer to help with a neighbor's yard."
