Annex: Unanimous vote
continued from page
originally brought to the council
March 21, unanimously passing to be
put on Tuesday’s action agenda for fi-
nal approval.
“I remember when that used to be
all trees up on that property, that big
piece of property, all over Mountain
View,” councilmember Kathy McDow-
ell said. “Cross country used to run
through the trees in their cross coun-
try meets. It’s exciting to see progress
and building tops and more property
that we can use.”
Mayor Eric Onisko echoed the com-
ments, stating “we definitely need
houses near here.”
Now that the council has approved
the request for annexation, the next
steps include the applicant formally
submitting a petition for annexation
in the area to the city. The county as-
sessor will determine sufficiency and
authenticity of the 60% petition, a for-
mal public notice Will be issued and
a public hearing held regarding the
annexation. Also, the council will con-
sider an ordinance for approval or de-
nial of the annexation of all or any por-
tion of the proposed area only included
in the petition. Annexation would be
effective on the date of the ordinance.
The City Council gave preliminary ap-
proval to sell surplus land on North 13th
Street in Shelton to Mason County Pub-
lic Hospital District No. 1 for $800,000.
The money from the sale would be paid
to the city water utility fund.
The property is 7.32 acres and is
across the street from Mason Health
and Mason General Hospital. The
property was declared surplus in Oc-
tober 2021. The purchase and sale
agreement retains~utility, trail and
conservation easements on the proper—
ty, so any development on the property
would have to upheld those easements.
Interim City Manager Mark Ziegler
briefed the City Council on the agree—
ment, stating the hospital district has
some interest in maintaining a campus
at that location and providing critical
health facilities within the campus.

Current projects include refinishing
and sealing the entry columns at Moun—
tainview Elementary School this week
during spring break, and the district’s
Enrollment and Boundary Committee
continuing is reports and findings this
summer.
Herron also updated the school board
on the construction and maintenance
projects slated for this summer.
The special education portables at
Shelton High School will be re-sided.
“They are desperately in need of that,”
Herron said. Leaks will be repaired on
the roof of the school’s Building 800.
The district will fulfill a request by
the Shelton Fire Department to widen
the gates and sidewalk at the west exit
of Mountanview Elementary School,
Herron said. The water will be tested
for lead, copper and other contaminants
districtwide, a study conducted every
two years, he said.
Other summer
projects include
repairing and painting fascia boards and
expanding joint gaps at Highclimber
Stadium; repairing and replacing parts
of the sidewalk and replacing three or
four windows at Oakland Bay Junior
High; a “final touchup of the plaster”
at the swimming pool at Shelton High
School; and seeding the grassy play area
and replacing flooring in a student bath—
room at Evergreen Elementary.
Looking beyond this summer, Her-
ron said the district should consider
projects that include reroofing the Shel-
ton High School Performing Arts Cen—
ter; painting and re-siding the older
portables in the district; replacing the
boilers ai Olympic Middle School, Bor-
deaux Elementary and the high school
pool; and reroofing the Early Learning
Center.
The basketball court wood floor in
the Shelton High School Mini—Dome
needs to be replaced, and the current
price is about $650,000, Herron said.
In the meantime, it will be refin-
ished, he said.
