RUNNING MILES IN YOUR SHOES
BYJOSEPH ZYGAK P. Z
A recent
study sug-
gests that
current mod-
els of highly
cushioned
running shoes may actually exert
more strain on joints than running
barefoot. While no one is suggest-
ing that runners toss their running
shoes, researchers found that run-
ning shoes with slightly elevated
heels increase torque (twisting mo-
tion) on mimers' knees, hips, and
ankles. In fact, researchers recorded
a 38 percent increase in torque in ar-
eas of the knee where osleoarthritis
develops. What surprised everyone
most is the fact that this increase in
knee torque is higher than the one
that the same researchers observed
in women wearing high heels,
which was only 20 to 26 percent.
This finding should lend strength to
the current minimalist movement in
running shoes.
