After making school history against
Gig Harbor High School, the Shelton High
School track and field teams faced tough
competition in a quadrangular meet on
Thursday at South Kitsap High School in
Port Orchard.
The boys and girls both finished third
place, behind Gig Harbor and South Kit-
sap.
Despite the Shelton boys earning their
first meet win over Gig Harbor in school
history the week before (March 24), head
coach Doug Sells said Shelton's depth for
the meet was not enough against "equally
strong teams."
"In bigger meets such as large invita-
tionals, league and district, we should be
on their level," Sells said.
Shelton junior C ody Tarver defeated one
of the 4A Narrows League's best throwers
in boys shot put (Gig Harbor's Tyler Am-
brose) for the second time after this season
with a first place throw of 46 feet and four
and a quarter inches.
Tarver also finished with a throw of 122
feet in the boys discus, a personal best by
more than three feet.
"As of now, [Tarver] is probably the fa-
vorite to win the shot [put] at the league
meet and should place high in the discus
as well," Sells said.
Shelton senior Brenna Thompson re-
turned to finish first in the girls 400 me-
ters with a time of 1:01.19, beating Gig
Harbor's Kelly Williams by less than half
a second.
Thompson also finished second in the
200-meter dash with a time of 27.84 sec-
onds, which was less than a second behind
South Kitsap's Amanda Wilson (27.46 sec-
onds).
Sells said the training program Thom-
spon is on is designed to maximize perfor-
mances for the distric~ and state meets.
"Her progress thus far has been quite
satisfactory," Sells said.
The Shelton girls relay teams took top-
three finishes in all three races. But the
Lady Highclimbers had their best run in
the 4x200-meter relay.
The team of sophomore Kasey Bu~-
bridge, junior Kandyce Bragg, freshman
Natalie Andrewski and Thompson finished
with a time of 1:52.50.
Sells said the time placed the team near
the top of both the Narrows League and
West Central District III in the event.
"We have an excellent group of girl
sprinters," Sells said.
Senior Tre Fisher took third in the high
jump with six feet, while South Kitsap's
Isaiah Davis finished first with six and a
half feet.
Sells said it was a positive for Fisher to
compete with one of the state's top jump-
ers, who has a personal best of six feet and
eight inches.

Above, Shelton High School's Cody Tarver won the boys shot put in
Thursday's quadrangular meet at South Kitsap High School in Port
Orchard. Below, Shelton's Annie Fitchett won the girls pole vault. The
meet also included Gig Harbor High School and Capital High School.
"A lot of times when a jumper is out of
reach its very important to focus on your
personal best and not what another jump-
er is doing," he said.
Sells said one Highclimber that showed
the most improvement from last week was
junior Roman Hurst, who finished fourth
in high jump (five feet, 10 inches) and
third in triple jump (41 feet).
"Only a junior, Roman [Hurst] has an
excellent chance of becoming one of Shel-
ton's best ever all-around jumpers," Sells
said.
