:COMMENTARY Th trial and error of playing catch Dean Siemon When I first met my girlfriend Jennifer many months ago, one of the first things she told me on our first date was that she had a son. That son is five-year-old Simon, who became an avid Chicago Bears fan within the first few weeks we met. In fact, he is still singing "Bear Down Chicago Bears" despite the season's end. What piqued my interest was that Jenn told me that Simon was ambidextrous, which means the youth could use both his right and left hands with equal abil- ity. Because I had a father that taught me all the sports I know and love, I de- cided that this was a great opportunity to pass along my knowledge to Simon. "Simon, how would you like to play football some- time?" I asked one Sunday afternoon in the fall. His ear-to-ear smile was the only answer I needed and thus began my career ~s a youth sports coach. I was initially excited, be~ cause I knew it was a spe- cial moment for me when my dad gave me my first .baseball glove - a youth Ken Griffey, Jr. glove that had his autograph printed near the basket. Sure, it wasn't really his authentic signature, but as a five-year-old, I was excited to have it nonetheless. But with the recent trial and error, it has only al- lowed me to gain more re- spect for all coaches that have to deal with kids. One minute, he'll be throwing the small foam football that is just the right size for his miniature hands and the next minute, he'll be picking the dandelions from the patch in the middle of the grass. Then his interest in sports changed with the seasons, as the football sea- son concluded and the focus shifted to baseball. I still had a bag of base- balls that I used to hit across the yard in Illinois, so I took him to Wal-Mart to buy a glove. Jenn had to take Simon towards the toys, because what five-year-old is able to stay away from the Legos when walking past the toy section? I selected a new fielder's glove, which was black with blue trim, sized for a young slugger like Simon. When I found the two in the toy aisle, I was disap- pointed to see that Simon decided he wanted a glove that was more like a win- ter glove with velcro near the area that was supposed to have a webbed-basket to make the diving catch. The "baseball glove" also came with a "ball" that was more like a fluff stuffed hackey sack. Refusing to forfeit, I still took Simon to the park to play catch. But once we ot to the park, he saw the imagination station nearby and immediately ran to the jungle gym, but not before handing the poof ,ball and "glove? Is this what all fathers go ,through with their kids? The Lady Highclimbers dance team finished eighth in the military category with a team score of 358 points. Shelton coach Taylor Shrum said while it was still a good score, the team was capable of doing better. "They were pretty nervous but they always seem to pull it together," Shn~m said. "That's a lot of people to perform in front of? The competition included more than 30 schools and more than 72 total performances from all categories. Shelton took 18 out of their 20 dancers to Yakima - five se- niors, eight juniors, one sophomore and four freshmen. "Right now, we have a couple assemblies and then the sea- son is done," Shrum said.
