New home for SHS grad, sons
By GORDON WEEKS

Trenton and Jeremiah Twidwell,
ages 2 and 3, on Friday frolicked on a
grassy lot in Shelton's Mountain View
neighborhood.
In about seven months, that empty
patch of grass will be the site of a three-
bedroom, two-bathroom house the boys
will share with their mother, Britni
Twidwell.
"My sons are looking forward to hav-
ing a backyard and being able to play
outside," said Twidwell, a 2004 gradu-
ate of Shelton High School.
On Friday morning, Habitat for
Humanity of Mason County hosted a
groundbreaking ceremony for its 25th
house at 2137 Washington St. The
faith-based housing ministry partners
with the community to improve, main-
thin and build affordable, quality hous-
ing for people in need.
The 1,200-square-foot house will
take about seven months to build, said
Marty Crow, the group's executive di-
rector.
The foundation is scheduled to be
poured in the next two or three weeks.
Construction is scheduled to begin
about May 1.
TwidweU said she and her sons are
living in a Shelton rental with mold
and structural issues. Twidwell, a sous
chef at a Lacey restaurant, said she
heard about the Habitat program from
a co-worker.
To qualify, the family must have
lived in Mason County for at least
one year; are in need of a safe living
environment; are willing to partner
with Habitat for Humanity; have a
steady gross income of 30 percent to
60 percent of the current median in-
come for Mason County; and be will-
ing to work 400 hours of "sweat eq-
uity" as a down payment toward the
house.
At Friday's groundbreaking cere-
mony, Habitat board member Andrew
Bertrand said the house wouldn't be
possible without the city's reduction
and elimination of building fees, which
went into effect last week. All three
members of the Shelton City Commis-
sion attended the ceremony.
Crow pointed out that the ground-
breaking was taking place on the 20th
anniversary of the founding of the Ma-
son County chapter. Crow said that
when he was hired as the group's exec-
utive director four months ago, he was
told to build more houses.
"There's a high probability that we'll
start another house before the end of
the year," he said.
Bill Novak, the group's construc-
tion manager, said this will be his lath
Habitat house. He calls the home part-
nership program "the theology of the
hammer."
Novak praised the "wonderful" vol-
unteers, and said everyone has skills
they can share.
"I have few people who came from
the trades .... I have retired every-
thing," he said.
