Sara Hall first started
competing in pageants
when she was in high
school.
In her junior and se-
nior years at Shelton High
School she served on the
Mason County Forest Fes-
tival Court, as the Princess
of Hemlock, and then the
Princess of Douglas Fir.
She also competed in the
Miss Mason County tour-
nament in her senior year
of high school.
Now, Hall is serving as
Mrs. Mason County, and
hopes to do well in the
Mrs. Washington pageant
on Nov. 3 in Olympia at
the Washington State Per-
forming Arts Theater.
"It's one of the more
prestigious 'Mrs.' pag-
cants," Hall said.
After serving four years
in the Marine Corps as a
logistician in California,
Hall and her sister-in-law
started looking into the
Mrs. Washington pageant.
Hall said this is the first
year that Mason County
has been represented in
the Mrs. Washington pag-
cant.
The contest includes an
interview, evening wear
and bathing suit portions
and an on-stage question,
she said.
Unlike the Miss Wash-
ington pageant, the Mrs.
Washington contest does
not include a talent por-
tion.
Hall's platform focuses
on the battle against child-
hood obesity. She advo-
cates exercise and healthy
snacking.
Hall volunteers at Bor-
deaux school and uses the
opportunity to encourage
students to learn healthy
habits.
"There have been a
couple instances where I
encourage them and show
them the importance of be-
ing active at a young age,"
she said.
Hall also participates in
a Relay for Life team called

Shelton NJROTC shines at American Legion conference
On March 30, American Legion Fred B.
Wivell Post 31 of Shelton hosted the Ameri-
can Legion 4th District Spring Conference
at Shelton Memorial Hall.
A color guard from Shelton High School
NJROTC presented the colors and was
awarded individual certificates of apprecia-
tion from Jake Cabuag, Washington State
American Legion department commander,
and Fred B. Wivell Post 31 Commander
Dick Taylor.
Cmdr. Taylor noted that the color guard
performed expertly and that the cadets
represented their NJROTC unit and SHS
in an exemplary manner.
"We are very proud of our NJROTC unit
and its accomplishments. Cadets have sup-

Wow, what a great Easter week-
end. We had family over, had
a bonfire, got the yard mowed
for the first time this year and had
a great dinner. Judy and I wish the
entire island a happy Easter a couple
days late.
April 13 is a busy and lucky day
at the Harstine Island Community
Club. The annual chili cook offwill
begin the regular monthly member-
ship meeting. Chili competitors should
bring their secret recipe chili to the
community hall beginning at 5:30
p.m. Members will begin taste testing
and voting for their favorite, which will
be crowned the winner. After feasting
on the regular potluck meal there will
be a short announce-
ment by artists John
Benn and Robert
Bonnet regarding the
upcoming tour of art-
ists on Harstine in
May.
The guest speaker
this month will
be Marty Brewer,
By MIKE superintendent of
CALLAGHAN the Pioneer School
District, telling us
about the status
and goals for the district. This full
evening will crown a winner, fill your
stomachs, prepare us for the upcom-
ing art event and educate us about our
schools.
The annual Women's Club spring
outing luncheon off the island took
place at the Colonial House in Shel-
ton this year. Fresh Start, located
on Pickering Road, catered it, Patti
Chapman and Marilyn Laubach
took charge of organizing the lun-
cheon. They served a green salad,
chicken breasts, pesto pasta salad
and rustic breads. Dessert was a
lovely pear pastry dish. About 50 la-
dies enjoyed the delightful lunch with
a springtime theme featuring vases of
daffodils at each table. After visiting
over lunch they were given a tour of
the former home of Mark E. Reed and
Irene Simpson Reed. Builtin 1920,
the home has gone through several
years of renovation and the ladies en-
joyed seeing the home and hearing
about the Reed family history.
The last senior lunch for the month
of April will be April 18.2~ey will be
serving taco lasagna, green salad and
sherbet.
This is one more call out for island
writers. There are several Harstine
Pointe and Harstine Island residents
interested in starting an informal
creative writing circle if enough writ-
ers or potential writers are interested.
The objective would be to gather on a
regular basis with others of various
skill levels to hear, encourage, discuss
and learn about each other's work in
progress. As James Michener once
said, "I love writing, I love the swirl
and swing of words as they tangle with
human emotions." So, if you are or
might be interested in participating in
a Creative Writers Circle here at the
Pointe contact JoAnn Ray, joannray@
earthlink.net, or call 432-3405.
The Harstine Island Theater Club
will award a $500 scholarship this
year. Application packets are available
at Shelton, North Mason and Mary M.
Knight high schools as well as Olympic
College Shelton. They are also avail-
able at the Shelton, Hoodsport and
North Mason branches of the public li-
brary. Completed applications are due
Aug, 1 and may be mailed to the Schol-
arship Committee, Harstine Island
Theater Club, 220E. Wilson Road,
Shelton, WA 98584. Notification of the
scholarship is usually made by Aug.
15, The recipient will receive funds
after successfully completing the fall
quarter of college work. Eligible ap-
plicants must be high school graduates
