Although Mrs. Milton lcGee, Shelton, r cently received the following let- ter from the captain of the US$ Haverfield, on which he was serv- ing during November, 1962, dur- ing Typhoon Karen. SUBJ : Typhoon "KAREN" 1. On the night of 11 November 1962 the eye of Typhoon "Karen" passed directly over Guam, leaving nine dead and enormous destruction in its path. The dia- meter of the eye was six miles a small, tight eye indicative of tremendous force and energy. The barometric pressure was 27.05 inches-- the lowest record- ed in any storm in history. Wind velocities of 150 knots sustained and 180 knot (202 mph) gusts were recorded before the Is- land's anemometers were blown away. U. S.S. HAVERYIELD during (DER-393) stood out of Apra Harbor, Guam early on the morning of 11 November 1962 and evaded Typhoon "Karen" Math Errors Slow Income Tax Checks • Mistakes in arithmetic are showing up n,ore frequently than any other type of taxpayer error on 1.966 federal income tax returns. Neal S. Warren, District Di- rector for Washington State, says that of the 3,517,174 returns filed so far this year by Wash- ington taxpayers and those in the nine other states in the IRS Western Region, a total of 97, 493 contained errors in addition or subtraction. Warren said these errors can delay the issuing of refunds when tax returns are checked for mathematical accuracy by computers at the IRS Service Center in Ogden. When an error is discovered in arithmetic that changes the tax liability, the correction is made and a notice explaining the change is sent to the taxpayers. Taxpayers should d o u b I e check their arithmetic before sending in their tax returns, Warren said. "Errors are ex- pensive to process and cause de- lay and inconvenience for tax- payers,", he added. As of last week, Warren said, the .IIS'Service Center in Og- den had processed 258,539 re- funds for Washington taxpayers for a total of $45,098,568.25. rough seas and strong winds were encountered 'for the next 36 hours, thanks to the efforts and allertness of all hands no storm dsznage, loss of life or serious injury was sustained by the HAVER2"IEI. 3. As the first Navy ship to reenter Apra Harbor in the wake of Typhoon "Karen,, , on the nmrning of 13 November, the HAVERFIELD immediately be- gan furnishing electrical power to the Ship Repair Facility, e- mergency radio communica- tions for local commands, mass- men to assist the Naval Station feed more than 8,000 typhoon victims daily, mall handlers to help restore postal services at Navy Post Office 926, working parties to help clear the wreck- age-cluttered harbor and clean up local military facilities, and to continued to provide these and other services through 27 November 1962. 4. For their successful evasion of Typhoon "Karen" the crew of the RAVER22EI.,D received a personal "Well Done" from R ADM John S. COYE, USN, Com- mander Naval Forces Marinas. On 11 January 1963 a letter of appreciation was received from the Commanding Officer of the U.S. Naval Station, Guam, which is quoted in part as follows : "During the night of 11-12 No- vember 1962 the Island of Guam was struck by Typhoon "Karen" cauVing extensive structural damage to this command. The immediate and tremendous task of recovery facing the Naval Station was overwheming. The many arduous tasks and special skills perforrned by your command aided and speeded our recovery. I know from per- sonal observation and through reports from members of my command that all your person- nel performed in an outstanding manner. I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation for a job that was truly 'Well Done.' (s) W.A. Clark" 5. As a crew member of the U.S.S. HAVERFILED during the period 11 through 27 Novem- ber 1962, you are commended for your performance of duty during the evasion of Typhoon "Karen" and the post-typhoon recovery operations. The spirit of cooperation and "can do" at* titude demonstrated by all mem- bers of the ship's company were in keeping with the highest tra- ditious of the Navy. 6.
