Two hundred thousand of these will be youngsters under 16 years who fish for free. A million trout will be caught this Sunday, most of which will be rainbow trout; 90 percent of these will come from the game department's hatchery program. Some of the weekend's catch will be "legal" trout, that is trout over six inches which were " planted in the lakes earlier this spring. The department already planted 3,900,000 of these fish this year. Cost to produce a legal trout is $1.25 per pound. The 3.9 million legals weighed 790,000 pounds for a total east to produce of $987,500. Youngsters under 16 years of age may fish for free, but they are entitled to a reduced creel limit. A good place to keep it is in your wallet or tackle box. Licenses can be picked up at more than 900 dealerships located statewide. If you're a spinyray pan fish angler, you'll be happy to know that there is no creel limit for bluegills, catfish, perch, crappie, freshwater ling cod or sunfish. Bass anglers should remember that the Limit on bass is 20 pounds and one bass, not to exceed 10 bass. Walleye fishermen can take 15 fish, not more than five of which may be over 20" in length. Fishing season starts at one second after midnight on Sunday, April 16, You don't have to wait for the sun to come up to catch your breakfast of tasty trout. To keep your fish fresh, always remember to put them on ice as soon as you catch them. This way they'll keep their good taste all the way to the skillet. If you're traveling some distance from home this weekend, a good idea is to tell a relative or friend exactly where you will be in case of an emergency. Be sure and leave home in plenty of time to get to your destination this weekend. With over 700,000 fishermen on the road, traffic jams will be commonplace. Drive carefully. It's a good thing to remember that you can't feed trout with fish eggs, roe, food or any other substance, except in certain silver trout lakes; these regulations are on pages three and seven of the game department's fishing pamphlet. Always keep a copy of the current fishing regulations in your tackle box. There's a ruler on the back cover to help you measure a trout to be sure it's legal. Regulations can be picked up free at more than 900 license dealerships. Check your fishing tackle to make sure it is usable after it has been stored all winter and make sure you have a 1978 fishing license. Be sure to check your regulations before you fish; some streams and beaver ponds do not open April 16. BLAZER DUANE BAKER vents a little prerace energy in the direction of Assistant Coach Marc Spiegelberg. So relieved, he went out and set a school record in the mile.
