SHELTON
III I
The Shelton Highclimbers
gave the
champion Capital Cougars a real
run for their ntoney this week
before bowing 21 in a gem of a
Black Hills League baseball game
Tile loss coupled with
Shelton's opening-day 4-6
setback last Friday at
Timberline dropped tile
Climbers league record to 02
going into tonlorrow afternoon's
game here against Centralia, but
it was hardly a loser's
perforlnance.
After yielding the hosts' only
runs of the game on a
second-inning single, sacrifice fly,
double and single. Clintber
moundsntan Jim Tobin settled
down to not only shut out the
Cougs tile rest of the way but
also limit theln to only three
more hamtless hits
Another key role in the
Climbers defensive effort was
played by fellow senior Kevin
Ridout whose strong arm behind
the plate gunned down three
wouldbe basestealers
Offensively the Climbers
were close on a couple occasions
In the third inning for instance
after Benny Ward's booming
Ward canle up half a step short
of tieing tile game
Juuior all league teammate
Jim O Dells single into lefl field
had Ward rounding third base
with a head of steam but
Coug;tr outfielder Drew Valles
threw him out at the plate wilh
a fine onebounce peg to end the
rally
Then in the fifth Climber
Lane Jackstadt s double off Coug
pitcher Dale McMaster looked to
be worth a run when teammate
Lindberg followed with a sharp
line drive
But the ball had the
unfortunate paucity of good
sense to take off in the general
vicinity of Capital's springloaded
shortstop Mike Miller whose
leaping catch again robbed the
visitors their apparent equalizer
Shelton mounted its final
threat in the seventh and last
frame Senior Tim Avey stroked
his second single of the
afternoon and stole second base
but was stranded there as the
hosts got the final two outs on
pinchhitter John Strong s
infraction (trying to bunt he
stepped on the plate) and
Tobin's infield popup
The game's overall quality
was apparent iu more than the
twin completegame
performances by the opposing
pitchers Both teams also played
error free ball - something of a
rarity in the BHL
The game ntarked the
Climbers second near ntiss of
the young season Last Friday in
the league opener they came up
with nine hits overall and scored
three of their four runs in the
last two innings but they
couldn't quite make up for the
hosts threerun explosion in the
second
Both Jackstadt and Ward hit
home runs in the corttest and
