30 Counties Share
in N. P. Tax Payments
NORTHEnN I, actFxc's "Main
Street of the Northwest" is a
mighty important arterial in
Washington State- providing
the best and most modern in
freight and passenger railway
services, And it's important to
the economy of the State, too,
Ist month the N. P. dis-
tributed $1,998,519 in property
taxes to 3(} counties in Washing-
ton. Previously the company
had paid $590,873 excise, oc-
cupational and miscellaneous
taxes--a total of $2,589,392.
51.78% -- more than a million
dollars of N. P. prope(ty tax
payments will go to support of
schools in this county and 29
other counties of the State.
19.5% --or $389,711 nf N. P.'s
1949 property tax payments will
help 30 counties maintain their
various duties and services.
7.04% or $1.40,696 will go to
cities and towns and 6.78% or
$135,,)0 will help meet various
miscellaneous activities of local
government. Above and beyond
these taxes paid within the
State, Northern Pacific each
year meets large income and
other Federal tax levies.
Even more important to the
economy of the Slate are the
purchases and payroll of the
Northern Pacific. I,ast year the
N. P. spent $9,561,405 in Wash-
ins(on for products, materials
and supplies. The 8770 men and
women working for the N. P. in
this State drew $28,497,865 sal-
aries and wqs. Taxes, payroll,
purchases--they add up to a
$40,000,000 factor in the econ.
omy of the State of Washington.

NORTHERN PACIFIC
149%--more than one dollar
out-of every seven will help
build roads and bridgSs, Thus
nearly $300,000 of N. P. taxes
will benefit other forms of trans-
portation -- often directly com-
petitive. The Railway, alone
among transportations agencies,
maintains its own right of way
and pay taxes on it![

"Hold Fast the Profession of Faith"
Stressed Sunday at Mt. Olive Church
(.'I,'M FI{()M REVERENI) fronl the text, Hebrew lO to '23.
AI,IIA(li', , SUNDAV 'l Following the sermon, eonfirm-
MORNING SEI{M()N I alien was held for those joining
the hm'ch. Movies were taken in
and around the elltlrt:h during the
morning. When the congregation
filed out after the service was
"tlohl fast to yore' profession
of faith in God," the Pahn Sun-
day theme of t.he Reverend Wil-
liam II. Albaeh's sermon at Mount
()live Lutheran Church, w a s
drawn from a pointed Epistle to
the Hebrews in tim Bible, implof
ins that the faithful retain their
f:tith in Christ despite ridicule,
mockery, persecution.
A day of confirmation services
to receive new members and to
strengthen the faiths of the older
ones, Pahn Sunday at Motmt Ol-
ive Churc'h served to prepare
Christians for the coming of Eas-
ter.
TIIF EPIRTLF to the Hebrews, I
as worded in the Bible, tells of I
social happenings that have been]
repeated in similar circumstances I
throughout history. , "Not. just an
incident in ancient hmtory, the.
multitudes praising of God one
day and the reviling of Him the
next happened often throughout
history," the Reverend Albach
said.
"We nnlst novel- compromise
Christianity with opposing doc-
trines while professing faith in
Christ Jesus," the Roy. Albach
continued. "We address ourselves
to the profession of faith in Jesus
Christ, our Savior, the center of
our text and (be heart of our
scriptures.
"EVERY IqIRPOE of the
church centers upon the strength-
ening of our faith. Our Sunday
schools and services teach us to
know and to be able to hold fast
our faith," the Rev. Albach
strongly reminded.
To hold fast to Christ means
that other ideals that conflict
must be cast aside. There is no
leeway, no variation from the
truth The doctrine of Christian-
ity centers on an unalterable
truth that allows no compromise,
the Rev. Albach said.
"Boiled down, the holding of our
profession of faith means to hold
fast to every word in the scrip-
tures. To profess faith is to rlve
it. to strengthen it continuously
every day. We must exercise our-
selves in creeds and deeds, and let
our faith be an integral part of
our daily living," the pastor stat-
ed.
"MORE TIIAN EVER, we need
today the exhortation to hold fast
to ur faith when conflicting
ide,4.s thrcaten it, when divorce
figures are climbing, when Chris-
tinnily is being' assaulted by many
usurping, motives. -
"We must do as God would
have us do and not turn to left
or right, because our faith is true,
and truth knows no compromise,"
Rcv. Albach continued.
"God is evex careful to fulfill
his every promise. If we seek the
kingdom of God, everything we
need will fall to us from God,"
the Reverend Albach said in draw-
mg toward the end of his ser-
mon. "Promises of God are more
wduable than anything we can at-
tain by wintering down our faiths,
by giving in to materialism, by
compromising."
TIlE SERMON WAS drawn
over, the cameraman, stationed
outside with the lens focused on
the door, was able to catch those
coming out.
Next Sunday being' Eastcr, your
Journal scribe is going homc to
Olympia, but the visits in Mason
county churches will be renewed
April 24.

} CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
"Doctrine of Atonement" is the
I subject of the Lesson-Sermon
] which will be read next Sunday in
all branches of The Mother Church,
The First Church of Christ, Sci-
entist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
Golden Text: John 1:29. "John
seeth Jesus coming unto him, and
saith, Behold the Lamb of God,
lhich taketh away the sin of the
world."
The following verse from Luke
is included in the Lesson- Sermon:
"And they said amgg themselves,
Who shall roll us away the stone
from the door of the sepulchre?
And when they looked, they saw
that the stone was rolled away: for
it Was very great."
From "Science and Health with
Key to the Scriptures" by Mary
Baker Eddy is ,the following cor-
relative statement: "Glory be to
God, and peace to the struggling
hearts! Christ hath rolled away
the stone from the door of human
hope and faith, and through the
revelation and demonstration of
life in God, hath elevated them to
possible at-one-ment with the spir-
itual idea of man and his divin4
Principle, Love."
