Knight High School track and field team went to North Beach High School in Ocean Shores for the second time this season on Thursday for a Pacific League meet. The girls team finished third with 42 team points, behind first place Willapa Valley High School (119 points) and second place North Beach (65 points). Freshman Hannah Frost took first in the girls 800-meter race with a time of 3:07.5, followed by Willapa Valley's Denise Mac- Donald's 3:12.9. Frost also finished second in the girls discus with a distance 77 feet and eight inches. "Between discus and 800, it's a tess up," said Mary M. Knight head coach Kitty Brehmeyer. "She's a good athlete of both of those events." Junior Linda Cook improved her distance in the girls shot put with a throw of 32 feet and 11.5 inches. "That's her main event," Brehmeyer said. "She really enjoys doing shot put." Cook also took fourth in the girls discus with 72 feet. The boys "team finished fourth place with 16 team points. First place went to North Beach with 141, followed by Willapa Valley (120) and Wishkah Valley (50). Sophomore Nick Dierkop finished second in the boys 300-me- ter hurdles with a time of 46.5 seconds, finishing behind Wil- lapa Valley's Aaron Friese's 44.2 seconds. Dierkop was two and a half seconds behind the other Friese brother, Matt, for third in the boys 110-meter hurdles: Brehmeyer said Dierkop should improve as the team moves closer to the sub-district and district meets at the end of the season. "As the season progresses, he~l keep working hard and knock those times down," she said. Dierkop joined teammates John Evans, Matthew Oien and John Pirtle competed in the boys 4x100 relay race finished second with a time of 55.5 seconds, four seconds behind North Beach's relay team. Brehmeyer said it was the first meet with a relay team this season, which could change the lineup by season's end. But she said Pirtle is the most likely to be kept in the 4x100 relay event. "I-Ie's very quick and he's experienced," Brehmeyer said. The Mary M. Knight coach said one athlete who has improved the most was Evans, who competed in the boys shot put (10th), boys javelin (llth) and boys long jump (12th). But Brehmeyer said it is Evans' attitude and demeanor that makes him valuable to the team. "I guess every team can get inspiration from somebody who is just having a good time while.working," she said.
