GROWING AREAS These grades are based on marine water quality samples collected by the Washington State- Department of Health (DOH), many on a monthly basis. They are linked to standards set by the National Shellfish Sanitation Program. The fecal coliform bacteria levels in the highest 10% of DOH’s 30 most recent samples cannot exceed 43 colonies/ IOOmL. This means that spikes in bacteria levels at a sampling site are too'high or too frequent. The closer the bacteria level to that limit, the worse the grade. Sites that exceed the limit are ‘ given an F or failing grade.
