Page A—28 Shelton-Mason County Journal — Thursday, April 16, 2020 Colette Mae I de Cartier Colette Marie de Cartier d’Yves aka Coco Cartier of Eldon, age 93, passed away April 2nd, 2020 in Shelton Health & Rehabilitation Care Facility with loved ones by her side. She was born in Namur, Belgium on July 29th, 1926. Coco lived an extraordinary life coming to the States in 1955 as a young, inde- pendent woman working first as an au pair for a Charlene darie Colby Dorcy Charlene Marie Colby Dorcy, age 91, passed away surrounded by family on 3/5/2020 af— ter a brief illness, at PeaceHealth Hospital in Vancouver, Washington. She and her husband, Bernard Dorcy, made Belgian family on the east coast. On a trip to the west coast to Visit cousins, she was cap- tivated by the Pacific Northwest landscape. Enjoying her new found freedom in the States, she settled in the Seattle area and later made her permanent home on the Olympic Peninsula. Coco was an avid thinker, artist, biblio- phile, and nature lover. In her youth she was a gifted pianist, encour- aged by her father Who was a violinist. She be- came a mountaineer when she lived in Seat— tle. Her kind, generous nature and wit touched all who knew her. Coco held many positions throughout her life. She graduated with distinc— tion from La Cambre Art School in Belgium. She worked in the UW library system as an in- formation specialist for many years and was their home in Shelton, WA for most of their married life of 73 years. She is survived by her devoted husband, Ber- nie, her 5 children: Mar- ica Echols (Michael), Lane (Barb), Kevin (Kathy), Barb Smith (Jack), Bruce (Laura), 13 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, her sister Mary Lou Or— luske, and many nieces and nephews. She was precededin death by her mother, father, and one sister, Frances Forhan. Charlene was born in Bellingham, Washing- ton to Merritt and Mary Colby. Although her fa- ther died when she was 11, she enjoyed a hap- py childhood with her mother and sisters. Charlene and Bernie ‘ DEATH also a translator, textile artist, weaver and prac— ticed art design. She had a'keen mind, walked countless miles in nature and was a gen- erous participant in her community contribut- ing her time and money to many worthy causes. She was fascinated [by the Pacific Northwest Native American cul- ture and successfully deciphered some Indian text for which she was thanked with a hand hewn bracelet by a se- nior Indian chief. During WWII, Coco and her family endured the Nazi occupation not only in their town of Namur but also within their family home. As members of nobility, (herfather was a Baron) the Nazis utilized their chateau as a base of op- erations. Her brother, Edgar, survived concen- tration camp while her grandmother concealed met through one of his sisters while both were still in high schOol. They married after her gradu- atiOn when she was 18 and he was 20. They were a loving and devot— ed couple for 73+ years. After their first grand— child was born 45 years ago, everyone in the family called her Mimi. Mimi was a wonderful mother, always attentive to her children and their needs. As they got older, she worked for a Shelton optometrist at first part time and then fulltime. She sewed, knitted, quilted and crocheted. After retirement, Bernie and Charlene traveled extensively throughout the United States, Can— ada and Europe. They wintered in Indio, CA for NOTICES Coco and her siblings from the Nazis during occupation. Not one for titles, Coco never touted her- self as a Baroness, pre- ferring to live a minimal- ist lifestyle in the States long before it was in our cultures lexicon. A true Belgian, she could sub- sist on a scalding cup of coffee, cheese and bread and a good book. Coco is survived by her nieces and nephews. Laure Dejardin, Benoit Dejardin, Carine Capi- tan and Franck de Cart- ier, of France, Maggy de Kerchove and ' Michel de Kerchove of Belgium as well as many other relatives in these coun- tries. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her but never forgotten. According to her wishes, Coco’s ashes will be dis- persed in the Hood Ca- nal, her second home for its beauty, its wild side and its serenity. ‘ 30+ years, before return- ing to Shelton to live full time at their home on Spencer Lake. Mimi was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Shelton, Wash- ington where she was in- volved in many activities until the last few years when she. and Bernie moved to Alpine Way Re- tirement Home in Shelton. At a date to be de- termined, there will be a mass at St. Edward’s Catholic Church, Shel- ton. It will be followed by a Celebration of Life for family and friends in the church’s gather- ing space. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Make-a-Smile Foun- dation or Make-a-Wish Foundation. William C. J oAnn Lee (Morgan) Herrick JoAnn Lee (Morgan) Herrick was born on a stormy night Janu- ary 26th 1932 at home on Bellevue Street in, Shelton WA to Virgil and Gertrude Morgan. JoAnn passed away on a sunny afternoon April 9th 2020 at home in Rochester WA. J oAnn met the love of her life “Robert Herrick” January 8th 1949. They married August 2nd 1950. They had 65 won- derful years together be- fore her “Bobby” passed in April 2015. When her kids were in school she was a member of Southside Homemakers, a 4-H leader and had a brown- ie troop. JoAnn had a daycare taking care of several Southside School kids. JoAnn and Robert were the first to join Yes- I teryear Car Club. They spent many fun years with the club in their 1921 Model T pickup. JoAnn spent many years as a wedding and any other occasion cake decorator from the fam- ily home. After her “Bobby” took an early retirement they spent many win- ters,in Yuma, Arizona and summers traveling Canada and the western states. They also worked as apple thinners and pickers at 'an orchard near Chelan WA. The or- chard owners only hired seniors. Many came from different states re- sulting in many lasting friendships. JoAnn was preceded in death by her sister Sharon Medcalf and brother Jim Morgan. JoAnn is survived by son Steve; daugh- ters Cheryle and Carol; granddaughter Beth, great-grandsons Dillon, Kaden, and Ashton; sev- eral nieces and nephews, and many dear friends. A graveside memo- rial will be planned for a later date at Shelton Memorial Park.
