By EMILY HANSON e.m ily@masonco~zn~,.com The Shelton baseball team earned its first victory of the season last week after enduring a tough loss. On Friday, Gig Harbor defeated the Highclimbers (1-11) 18-0. Junior Jared Welander started the game on the mound but senior David Gorman pitched the final four innings. "We had some very inopportune errors and we just never hit the ball," Gorman said. "We started off bad and let it get to us ,instead of putting it behind us and playing the game." Statistics from this game were not avail- able. The Highclimbers rebounded from the shutout loss to defeat Wilson 7-2 at home on Saturday. "We had a chat after the Gig Harbor game and came into the Wilson game fo- cused and not thinking about Gig Harbor," Gorman said. Senior Patrick Fabrizio pitched all sev- en innings against Wilson and notched six strikeouts, two walks and gave up one earned run. "Pat did a great job on the mound," said SHS pitching coach Trevor Ca- hoon. "He was able to pitch his way out of tight spots." SATURDAY: Cahoon said Curtis Shelton .......... 7 Wuestner, Forrest Puter- Wilson ........... 2 baugh and Sam Gerhold were aggressive in getting TOMORROW: the Highclimbers some Shelton vs. timely hits. Timberline, "Defensively, we didn't 4 p.m. hurt ourselves," he said. "We didn't make any major errors and that's what's hurt us in the past." Cahoon said the team definitely had a higher confidence level on the field against Wilson. "Hopefully with warmer weather we'll be able to get out here and take some hacks but we have to be able to hit against quality pitching," Cahoon said. The Highclimbers are scheduled to play at 4 p.m. tomorrow at home against Tim- berline and at 4 p.m. on Monday at home against Mt. Tahoma. By EMILY HANSON The Shelton track and field teams per- formed well at home last week. On April 11. the Highclimbers hosted Olympia and Capital in a home meet at which the SHS boys' team took second place with 46 points and the girls' team took third place with 39 points• "The meet went fairly well for most of the team on Wednesday," said Doug Sells. STIS head track and field coach. "The kids are really starting to settle into the events they are good at, so I am see- ing a lot of personal bests happen as each meet goes by. I would say over half the team set personal records in at least one event atthe meet. This is great. You can really see the effort coming from a lot of these kids." Sells marked two persona] records as noteworthy. "Indi Endicott set an outstanding PR in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.70 sec- onds," Sells said. "This ranks him as the mnth fastest 300 hurdler that Shelton has ever had. This is exciting to see because I have the school record in this event and [ndi's dad. Rob Endicott. has the second fastest time ever. I'm really excited to see just how fast Indi runs this year•" The other personal record Sells high- lighted was that of the girls' 800-meter relay team. The ~eam Natalie An- drewski. Madisen Striplin. Niko Zorn and Kandyce Bragg -- ran the event with a time of 1:51.98, which ranked them as the No. 2 800-meter relay team in the 4A Narrows League. "I'm excited about the remainder of the season." ,Sells said. '%Ve will finally be kicking off our invitational schedule on Friday with the Mountain Invitational. The team will be smaller and more re- fined for the invitationals. We only take our top two in each event." The Mountain Invitational starts at 3:30 p.m. tomorrow at Yelm High School. "Now is the time of year when you re- ally start to see the kids excel." Sells said. "I want to go to a school in Indiana." Wuestner said. "(Going out of state) you get away from the attitudes in Shelton. Everybody treats you nicer (in Indiana) and people don't pick on you." Wuestner took a five-day trip to Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., recent- ly and that's when he real- ized how much he enjoyed being out of Shelton and in Indiana. In his final year of high school. Wuestner~-- a third- baseman for the Highclimb- ers - is working hard to ensure he'll get a college education. /~ "I'm taking pre-cal- culus, chemistry, sports lit- erature. multime- dia com- munica- Curtis t i o n s . Wuestner S p a n i s h and I took myths and legends last semesterf he said. "One thing colleges have liked from my applica- tions is the courses I'm tak- ing." Wuestner has main- tained a 3.5 GPA, been on the honor roll since his sophomore year and is a member of the honor soci- ety. His hard work has paid off so far, "I've been accepted to all the junior colleges and com- munity colleges I've applied to," he said. His No. 1 choice is still Wabash College but he said his application has been de- ferred for the time being. "I'll probably go to a com- munity college like Lower Columbia or Wenatchee Valley," Wuestner said. "I wanted to get a degree in engineering but I think my freshman and sophomore years I'll take variety of classes to see what l like and what I'm good at." Though Wuestner origi- nally thought he wanted to become an architect, he is now also considering going into agriculture. "I w.ork on two farms and at a landscaping firm. I like ~o work outside." he said.
