Winter Wind Damages Arthur Godfrey Tree A t Mason Lake
I l%cent winter winds tore a
huge arm off a lofty maple tree
dedicated to radio-television per-
sonality Arthur Godfrey by tim
Simpson Titular Company in
1957.
The tree was dedicated when
the "Arthur Godfrey Time" tele-
vision show was filmed at Simp-
sma's Mason Lake Recreation
Area.
In August of i957 more than
50 television people from New
York and Hollywood camped in
tents at the Recreation Area.
Two television shows originated
from lason Lake, featuring a
logging show and the story of
Pacific Northwest reforestation,
in addition to performances by
members of the Godfrey troupe.
At the time the Arthur God-
frey Tree was dedicated, God-
frey was made an honorary
member of the Simpson Recrea-
tion Association.
The tree still stands, but a
huge hole now gapes on the
side where the arm was torn
off.
