City commissioners made
the right decision this week to
rezone 160 acres of land just
south of Sanderson Field.
The change in zoning from
commercial/industrial to
neighborhood/residential use
opens the door to much-needed
development here in Shelton.
The California based Hall
Equities Group now has an
opportunity to build a new
neighborhood which in turn
will allow them to develop
commercial, retail and
recreational spaces along the
west side of Highway 101.
This rezone has been a long
time coming and was met with
stiff opposition by the Port of
Shelton, local pilots and others.
The main objection to allowing
t
the development of a neighbor-
hood so close to the airport
had to do with concerns about
noise.
The port succesfully ap-
pealed an initial rezone be-fore
the Western Washing-ton
Growth Management Hearings
Board due to those concerns
and sent the city back to the
drawing board.
Extensive studys have now
shown that the port's concerns
about noise are unwarranted.
ARer years of doubt, de-
bate, dilly-dallying and de-
liberation, we hope that the
next thing we hear won't be
a 747 landing at Sanderson
Field, but rather a back-hoe
turning some dirt just to the
south.
