Page C-4 - Shelton-Mason County Journal - Thursday, April 21,2011 By DEAN SIEMON Shelton High School had two individual champions at the Mountain Invite on Friday at Yelm High School in Yelm. Senior Brenna Thomp- son won the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.70, which beat Capital High School's Madison Guscott by less than one second. "I wanted to win so I'm hapy with that," Thompson said. "As always, I'm trying to get my time down." Thompson said that it is a long season but she is feeling good so far. "I'm excited to be a se- nior because I kind of know how everything works," she said. "When you're a new- bie, it's intimidating." Thompson also took sec- ond in the girls 200-meter dash with a time of 27.02 seconds. Senior Jon Ownby earned first place in the boys javelin with a throw of 171 feet and five inches, which is around his average for the season. Ownby said he was given the number-three seed at the beginning of the event but didn't feel underrated. "The first place guy was only three feet ahead of me and the second place guy was only 11 inches ahead of me," Ownby said. "I knew it was just a matter of who wanted it more." "I'm excited to see what he's capable of," said Shel- ton head coach Doug Sells. A number of Highclimb- ers earned top-five finishes in the invitational. In the boys 1,600-me- ter run, freshman Cody Williamson finished with a time, of 4:41.14, trail- ing Olympia High School's Nate Brennand by more than 13 seconds. Sells said Williamson earned a personal best time and has been doing well all season. "We're really happy to see what he's doing," Sells said. "He's an extremely fierce competitor." Shelton's team in the girls 4x100 meter relay took fourth place with a time of 52.31 seconds - juniors Re- becca Nutt and Kandyce Bragg with freshmen Nata- lie Andrewski and Kasey Burbridge. Not only did they beat Olympia's team, who fin- ished fifth by a hundreth of a second, but they earned a personal record in wet con- ditions. "To earn a season PR In this weather is something," Sells said. "They're coming together. It's a great group of girls."
