Journal photo Gordon Weeks County prepares former Olsen Furniture building to house COVID-19 homeless Commission awards contract to repair roof By Gordon Weeks gordon@masoncounty.com The Board of Mason County Com- missioners on Tuesday awarded a contract to Cogent Construction to repair the leaking roof on Building 10 —- formerly the home of Olsen Fur- niture — to prepare the building to possibly house homeless people who have the coronavirus. The effort is part of the Mason County Health Department’s COVID—19 Expanded Sheltering Plan. A draft of the plan, updated April 7, calls for accommodating up to 80 people in the building at 414 W. Franklin St. In awarding the $213,702 con- tract, the commission used a county resolution allowing it “to enter into contracts without regard to time- consuming procedures and formali- ties prescribed by law.” In its report to the commissioners, the county fa- cilities department stated it solicited A—l Roofing and Fikes Roofing for bids, but didn’t receive responses. As- cend Roofing and Roof Doctor did not submit bids, the department stated. The county received bids from Bates Roofing and Cogent. In the Expanded Sheltering Plan, “assumptions” include the coronavi- rus affecting unsheltered people and there will be a need for additional housing for them. “.Without housing for self-isolation, this population poses a greater risk for serious illness and spreading that illness to others in the community,” the plan states. At Tuesday’s meeting, the commis- sioners also approved a donation of $50,000 to the Community Founda- tion of South Puget Sound. The commission set a public meet- ing for 9:15 am. May 19 to amend the 2020 Annual Construction Program and 6—Year Transportation Improve- ment Program.
