Northcliff Road was blocked
briefly Monday afternoon af-
ter a distracted driver swerved
across traffic and drove up an
embankment.
"Basically it appears that it
was a driver that was distract-
ed by some items tha~ fell in his
vehicle." said Lieutennant Les
Watson of the City of Shelton
Police Department.
When the driver tried to
retrieve the items that fell in
the car. the car hit a pole, and
swerved across traffic, ending up
nearly vertical on the embank-
ment on the east side of the road.
Nobody was injured and no
other cars were involved.

By NATALIE JOHNSON

The Peninsula Art As-
sociation's annual Spring
Art Show began exhibiting
local ar~ on April 18, and
has drawn 109 submissions
from area artists.
This year Carmella
LaRose Meyers won the
grand prize for her submis-
sion entitled "Sunrize in
Amazonia."
"I thought the piece was
really creative," art associa-
tion president Becky Shuy-
ten said.
Olympia artist Michael
Croman served as judge
this year.
"It's hard to pick a judge,
you want to get somebody
who's had experience and
who practices their art,"
Shuyten said. "Every judge
is different."
Croman works primar-
ily with oil paint to create
unique landscape paint-
ings.
"His style of painting
uses oils and then he does a
wash that makes it run and
it almost looks like it's in a
fog or something," she said.
Shuyten congratulated
everyone involved -- those
who won ribbons and those
who didn't.
"I don't even think you
should judge art shows,"
she said. "How do you com-
pare one style to another?
It's always so interesting to
see what people will come
in (with)."
Art association volunteer
Sharon Brocha won a first
place ribbon for an acrylic
painting called "Falling
Flowers."
"I thought that it was
varied, it showed a lot of de-
velopment," she said. "For a
