Cinchona
The war in Vietnanl has caused
increased dem:ind for quinine,
which is derived from the bark of
[le cinchona tree--l)ecause some
strains of malaria parasites in
Southeast Asia do not yield to the
synthetic antimalarials currently
:wailable.
First mention of the medic:d
value of cinchona dates back lo
1633 in Peru. Although it is not
known who originally discovered
t, he antimalarial properties of the
bark. the drug and the tree are
named after the Countess of Cin-
titan, wife of the SI)anish Viccro.v
of Peru, who is said to have been
cured by it.
