New screeninyg goes smoothl at courthouse By KEVAN MOORE The installation of a new weapons screening station at the Mason County courthouse seems to have gone off with- out a hitch. "It seems to b e going over fairly well," said Mason County Sheriffs Office Chief Deputy Dean Byrd. "There are some mi- nor complaints about not getting in on the Fifth Street side, but we really need to do that so that everybody can be fun- neled in and screened for weapons. In order to maintain the integrity of our se- curity system, people need to be entering the courthouse from one entrance." That single entrance, from the Fourth Street side of the building, now includes an x-ray machine, a metal detector and two trained deputies. So far, wait times have been relatively short. "It's a minor inconvenience for a large increase in security," Byrd said. "I don't think there will be any large back-ups at the courthouse, but there of course could be an occasional delay. So far, though, we're very pleased with the success we've experienced." Shelton gold Journal photo by Gaylene Wiseman A rainbow lands near the Simpson Mill in Shelton last week after a rainstorm.
