Despite early struggles, Shelton High School's Forest Puterbaugh
pitched a complete game at 3A Timberline High School in Lacey on
Friday.
First two innings doom Shelton on road
By DEAN SIEMON
While Shelton High
School baseball played well
defensively in five of the in-
nings at 3A Timberline High
School, it was not enough in
Friday's 6-1 loss.
The Highclimbers (2-13,
1-11 4A Narrows League)
were outscored by the Blaz-
ers (13-2, 7-0 3A Narrows
League) 6-0 in the first two
innings.
"We just lose it in one or
two innings," said Shelton
outfielder Danny Higuchi.
"We should be a .500 or bet-
ter club right now."
Shelton's Forest Puter-
At the top of the inning,
Puterbaugh hit Timberline's
Colin McCusker before an
RBI double from Ben Smith
and an RBI from Colin Pat-
terson.
Timberline's David Padil-
la hit an RBI double for the
fourth run of the first.
In the second inning,
Timberline's Ro]ert Ortiz
and Ryan Tydingco each
had RBI singles.
"They were just hitting
where we weren't," Higu-
chi said. "But when [Puter-
baugh] was getting control,
they were hitting it right to
our players."
runners on base.
"There was a lot of pres-
sure put on by the other
team," Higuchi said. "And
when you're playing intese
like when we were battling
back, sometimes you could
be a little overanxious."
James Dickson went
three out of four in the
game. But Joe Strand had
the single run batted in on
a sacrifice fly with the bases
loaded in the fifth inning.

Fifth inl'ing rally leads to
turning point in season
By DEAN SIEMON
After trailing 3-0 through three in-
nings while hosting Klahowya Second-
ary School on Thursday, the North Ma-
son High School softball team made a
turning point in their 2011 season.
The Lady Bulldogs scored six runs in
the bottom of the fifth inning en route
to a 8-3 1A/2A/3A Olympic League win.
North Mason (6-9, 6-7 Olympic
League) began the inning trailing the
Eagles (3-7, 3-6 Olympic League) 3-1
with J.ordyn and Tristan Stromberg
each getting on base and advaning on a
hit from Amanda Johnson.
After a wild pitch allowed Jordyn
Stromberg to steal home, Abbey Mar-
shall hit a two-run double with one out.
During the at-bat, Marshall hit two
pitches down the left field line, both go-
ing foul by a small margin.
"My legs were shaking," Marshall
said about after hitting two foul balls.
"I always get nervous when I have two
strikes."
Marshall said her double, which
helped start the scoring rally, came off
a pitch inside the strikezone.
"When they're inside, it definitley
helps," she said.
North Mason head coach Molleigh
Fusare said Marshall, like some of
those that have struggled in the Lady
Bulldogs' lineup, has been hitting the
ball hard all season.
"We're making adjustments at bat to
get hits," Fusare said.
The next North Mason batter, Kori
Frohlich, hit an RBI double as well and
after a double from Julie Johnson, Em-
ily Younkin hit a two-run double of her
own. •
All six runs were scored while the
Lady Bulldogs had only one out.
North Mason combined for 11 hits as
a team, led by Younkin, Julie Johnson
and Marshall, each went two for three.
"We're really coming around at the
right time," Fusare said. "We're putting
the ball in play from one through nine
[in the lineup]."
And with the league win on April 20
against Port Townsend High School at
home by a score of 16-0, 10 runs in the
sixth inning, Fusare said the recent of-
fensive eruption is a turning point in
the season.
"Playoff spots are up for grabs and we
have to be hungry to get one," she said.
