Rick Smith is MGH & FC's new Chief Financial Officer. He began working for the Hos-
pital and its eight Clinics the end of March, following Merle Brandt's retirement. Rick
comes to MGH & FC with a combined 25 years of director's experience in finance and
in revenue cycle, and as interim CFO at an area hospital. He has a Bachelor's degree in
Business Administration with emphasis in Accounting.
Cheryl Woods, a licensed physical therapist, was recently reap .......
pointed as Director of Rehabilitation Services for MGH & FC. She served as director of the
Physical Therapy (PT) department from 1986 to 2000 - when she stepped down to work
part-time. At present, the PT department has nine employees, including physical thera-
pists, PT assistants, receptionists, technicians, and a speech therapist. Cheryl grew up in
Shelton, graduating from Shelton High School in 1980, and went on to receive her Bach-
elor of Science degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Puget Sound in 1984.

The Karen Hilburn Breast and Cervical Cancer Fund was recently presented with a check for $25,000
from the Charitable Trust of Margery Jones, a former Shelton resident and cancer survivor. Miss Jones had
left her estate to be donated to charitable non-profits, and this is the second consecutive year the Hilburn
Fund has been a major recipient: Last year the estate donated $20,000 to the Fund in a check presented to
Founder Karen Hilburn by Miss Jones' niece, Betty Temple. The Karen Hilburn Breast and Cervical Cancer
Fund helps women who are uninsured or underinsured with the expenses for the treatment and diagnoses
of breast and cervical cancers.
MGH Foundation Seeks Nominations for 2012 American Business Women's Award
MGH Foundation is seeking nominations for its 15th annual American Business Women's Award.
Applications are due by Thursday, May 31. The awards will be presented at a Luncheon held in their
honor on Friday, September 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Due to Hospital construction, the location will be
announced at a later date. Tickets for the event are $25 per person. Every year, MGH Foundation honors
outstanding business women who are or were successful in their occupations, work or have worked in Mason
County, and are active and volunteer in their community.
To nominate someone for this year's award, print out an entry form from the Hospital's website at www.

"Living Well With Diabetes"Class in July... A diagnosis of diabetes does
not mean that it has to take over your life! If diabetes is a part of your life, plan to
attend MGH & FC's three-day class entitled "Living Well With Diabetes" The
three consecutive evening sessions will take place Tuesday through Thursday,
July 10, 11, and 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Skokomish Room at the Hospital. Due
to limited space, advanced registration is required. Diabetes education is o cov-
ered service under most insuranceplons. To pre-register, call Sue Barwick, R.N.,

MGH & FC FREE Community CPR Class in June... MGH & FC is offering
another FREE Adult, Child, and Infant Basic Life Support CPR class on
Thursday June 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. in MGH & FC's Learning Center, located next to
McDonald's on Olympic Highway North. The class is open to the entire commu-
nity, and everyone is advised to wear comfortable clothing. A Spanish interpreter
will be made available on request. Class size is limited, so please pre-register by
calling The Learning Center at (360) 427-3609. This is not a FirstAid class.
"Impact Of Medications on Blood Sugar"- May Topic at MGH Shelton
Diabetes Support Group Meeting... Knowing how your medications interact
and the potential side effects is of special importance to those with diabetes,
since some medications typically increase or decrease blood sugar. The topic
at the next Mason General Hospital Shelton Diabetes Support Group meeting is.
"Impact of Medications on Blood Sugar"and is set for Thursday, May 17 from
1 to 2 p.m. in the Ellinor Room at the Hospital. The guest speaker is MGH & FC's
new staff Pharmacist Craig Tavis, RPh, whose extensive knowledge includes
a family history in pharmacology and tenure at Providence St. Peter Hospital,
Olympia, among other pharmacies that span his 22-year career. Craig will dis-
cuss medications that affect blood sugar, awareness of how certain medications
interact, and concerns about side effects. He will also set aside time for ques-
tions and answers. The She/ton Diabetes Support Group, affiliated with the American
Diabetes Association, meets ot the Hospital every third Thursday of the month from
September to June. It is free and open to people with type 1 and 2 diabetes, their
