• Last Call for Hospital Foundation's American Business Women Award Nominations. The
deadline for nominations for Mason General Hospital Foundation's 2011 American Business Women
award is May 31, so if there is a special woman whom you'd like to nominate for this year's award,
entry forms are available online at www.Mason General.corn, or may be picked up at MGH's
Development Office at Gateway Center, 2505 Olympic Highway North, Suite 460, Shelton, 98584.
Every year, MGH's Foundation honors three outstanding business women who are or were
successful in their occupations, work or have worked in Mason County, and are active and volunteer
in their community. From this year's pool of nominees, three extraordinary business women will be
selected to be honored at the 14th annual American Business Women's Day Luncheon that will
be held Friday, September 16, 2011, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hospital's downstairs meeting
rooms. Tickets for the luncheon are $25 per person. Nominations must be postmarked or received

• Mark Schlauderaff, M.D., board-certified internal medicine, Olympic Physicians, PI.LC, was
recently named to the Meaningful Use Vanguard (MUV) by the washington & Idaho Regional
Extension Center (WIREC) for leadership in adoption and meaningful use of
electronic health records (EHRs). The MUV program, developed by the
and Human Services'OIfice of the National Coordinator
Information Technology (ONC), recognizes and celebrates champions
of EHR adoption and meaningful use.
Dr. Schlauderaff was recognized by WIREC because of his strong commit-
ment to using certified EHRs for the purposes of improving patient quality
of care and for helping to lead the way for other healthcare providers in
demonstrating meaningful use. .
"At Olympic Physicians, we strive to give the best healthcare possible, and
one avenue is through detailed medical recording and tracking," stated Dr.
Schlauderaff. "We are on the leading edge of the use and application of
technology that gives our patients more comprehensive care." Those named
to the MUV program stand out among their peers as thought leaders, innovators,
role models, and trusted local advisors. Selection of Dr. Schiauderaff was based upon criteria such
as experience in using EHR as a clinical management tool, a willingness to share expertise with
others, and a successful transition from paper records to an EHR.

Come Celebrate HOPE with us!
HOPE is a school and community garden that nourishes
participants through access to fresh produce, social
activities, and educational opportunities. Sponsored by
Mason General Hospital, and established in 2010, HOPE
Garden launched its pilot program this year. Students
from Head Start, Olympic Middle School, CHOICE, and
Youth 'N Action plant, harvest, and prepare meals with
the harvest while applying math, science, and literacy
skills. Sixteen community members are renting garden
plots for their pers0nal use.
The HOPE garden is located at Mountain
View Drive, across from MGH's main entrance.
The garden will be opening its gates and
honoring the ,individuals and organizations
that made the work possible on Monday,
May 9, 2011 at 11:00 am. Everyone is
invited to join in on this Ribbon Cutting
event and support positive growth from
the ground

- May Topic for Shelton Diabetes Support
Group Meeting
Self-management of diabetes has helped
many people lead a normal, healthy life, and
with the aid of Mason General Hospital's new
online technology, it just got easier. "Take
Charge of Your Health - Online"will be the topic
covered at MGH's next Shelton Diabetes
Support Group meeting set for Thursday, May
19, 2011 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Ellinor Room
at the Hospital.
UGH Director of Information Technology,
Tom Hornburg, MCSE, CCNA, CXE, A+, and IT
Manager, Gary Deimert, MCITP:EA, CCNA,
CXE, will introduce MyMasonHealth.com, a
new, online service that stores health
information in Microsoft HealthVault®.
Microsoft HealthVault, via MyMasonHealth.com,
allows one, easy-to-use location for access to
health information such as medical and
surgical histories, doctor's visits, and
prescriptions, to name a few.
'q'om and Gary will go over the many
features of this valuable service, and
demonstrate how to organize, manage, and
share secured, private health information with
doctors and others," said Sue Barwick, I N.,
certified diabetes educator, coordinator of the
Support Group. MyMasonHealth is open to
anyone that wants online access to their
medical information, 24/7, from anywhere in
the world.
The UGH Diabetes Support Group,
affiliated with the American Diabetes
Association, meets at the Hospital every third
Thursday of the month from September to
June. It is free and open to people with type 1
and 2 diabetes, their friends, and family. For

and ask for the Diabetes Wellness Center).
• Would you recognize the symptoms of
a heart attack or stroke and know what to
do about it? Mason General Hospital, in
partnership with the community, has a vision
for saving lives, and is again offering a FREE
Adult, Child, and Infant Basic Life Support
CPR class, to be held on Thursday, May 12,
2011 from 6 to 9 p.m. in MGH's Learning
Center, located next to McDonald's on Olympic
Highway North.
The class is open to all members of the
community, and will demonstrate the proper
technique for adult, child, and infant CPR, as
well as review the symptoms of heart attack
and stroke. Everyone attending the class is
asked to wear comfortable clothes, and a
Spanish interpreter will be made available on
request.
Pre-registration for the class is required,
as class size is limited, so please make your
reservations by Friday, May 6 by calling the
UGH Learning Center at (360) 427-3609. Th/s
is not a l rst Aid class.
• If diabetes is a part of your life, plan to attend
Mason General Hospital's next three-day
session entitled, "Living Well With
Diabetes." The class will be held on three
consecutive evenings - Tuesday to Thursday,
June 14 through 16, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the
Hospital in the Ellinor Room. The class is taught
by an expert team of healthcare providers at
UGH, who will cover the diagnosis of diabetes,
diabetes medications, proper meal planning,
exercise, prevention and treatment of
complications, stress management, living with
diabetes, and the use of support people and a
healthcare team. Studies show that effective
self-management of diabetes is beneficial for
the patient and their family. Due to space
limitations, advanced registration is
required. Diabetes education is a covered
service under most insurance plans. To pre-
