Caleb Schlauderaff
Former
Highclimber
drafted to
Packers
By DEAN SIEMON
Former Shelton High
School football star Caleb
Schlauderaff was enjoying
the sunshine of Hawaii dur-
ing the weekend of the 2011
NFL Draft.
As of Saturday, he prob-
ably has more winter gear
for a trip to the Midwest.
Schlauderaff was select-
ed as the 179th pick in the
sixth round by the Green
Bay Packers, the defending
Super Bowl champions.
"I couldn't think of a bet-
ter opportunity," Schlauder-
aff said. "I'm going to have
to step up and earn every-
thing."
The former Highclimber
said he was in Hawaii over
the weekend with his moth-
er and grandmother, who
has a condominium there.
He said the trip helped hiin
get away from people.
"I kidd of wanted to get
away because it's already
a stressful peri0d, 8chlau-
deraff said.
Schlauderaff said he
was first called by Green
Bay general manager Ted
Thompson before speaking
with head coach Mike Mc-
Carthy and offensive line
coach James Campen.
"It's definitely a surreal
experience,~ Schlauderaff
said. "It's one of those things
you want to do as a kid. It's
probably the best day of my
life."
Schlauderaff was part
of the Highclimber foot-
ball squad that won the 4A
Narrows League's Bridge
Division with a 9-1 record
(7-0 in league), ending their
season with a loss in the dis-
trict tournament to Kamiak
High School 41-14.
"Even back then he had
a tremendous work ethic,"
Shelton head coach Matt
Hinkle said. "The program
is real happy for Caleb
and it's a result of his hard
work."
During his five years at
Utah, Schlauderaff started
49 games as a four-year
starter at left offensive
guard.
In the 2010 season, he
was named to four All-
American teams, including
the Associated Press (third
team) and SportsIllustrat-
ed.com (second team).
But Schlauderaffs road
to Green Bay had some
speed bumps.
Before the NFL Combine
in February, Schlauderaff
was suffering from a left
hamstring injury. During
Utah's pro day on March 29,
he was limited in workouts
due to a tear in his right calf
that normally takes up to
six weeks to heal.
"I worked really hard
but I got dinged up at a bad
time," he said.
He said coaches were
telling him that he could
expect to be dral~d in the
sixth round, despite major
