Lady C limbe et much n ed. win
as league tournament approache
By DEAN SIEMON
Even if it was against Mount Tahoma High School, Shelton
High School softball needed the win on Friday in Tacoma.
The Lady Highclimbers (3-8, 2-7 4A Narrows League) de-
feated the Thunderbirds (1-10, 0-9 4A Narrows League) 15-0
in a mercy-shortened five-inning game.
Shelton only needed eight hits in the game while Mount Ta-
homa's pitching combined for 13 walks and two hit batters.
"they were so out of the zone that you didn't want to swing,"
Shelton head coach Kim Goldsby said. "The umpire said he
was going to expand the strikezone.~
In addition, the Thunderbirds committed six errors in the
game.
Shelton pitching combined for only two hits allowed in the
shutout.
Madison Gaa started, but only pitched the first two innings
while striking out three Thunderbirds.
Graycee Hanna, who came up from junior varsity, pitched
the last three innings and earned a strikeout while giving up
the two hits.
Several Shelton junior varsity players got to play on Friday,
including Chyanne Petty, Alyssa York, Katie Madison, Nicho-
le Christensen, Tineya Systma and Kelsey Holloway.
Goldsby said Friday was a good chance for the younger Lady
Highclimbers to gain varsity experience before the Narrows
League tournament (no dates and locations have been an-
nounced yet).
"Some of them are going to come up to the league tourna-
ment, Goldsby said.
Jordanne Krumpols was the only varsity athlete to play the
entire game, going one for two with two RBI and three stolen
bases.
One of the things Goldsby said Shelton has been working on
is focusing on the ball on the pitcher's release point as well as
short swings at the plate.
"We're finally starting to see that working," she said.
Shelton has two upcoming make-up games at home - today
at MCRA against Central Kitsap High School and Tuesday,
May 9, at home against Olympia High School.

The Lady Highclimbers (3-7) were
led by Caitlyn Ernst and Rilee Villan-

"This is a match I felt we should
have won," Shelton coach Lorna Mar-
tinson said. "We just got into trouble
out on the course and couldn't get out
of it."
Martinson said while the course
layout at Trophy Lake is the most
difficult the team has seen all sea-
son, she feels Shelton has more talent
than their score showed on Tuesday.
"I have let the girls know I feel
they can score 80 points as a team if
we can all put it together, so that will
be our goal as we move forward," she
said.
Shelton did score more than 80
team points in the loss to Gig Harbor
on Monday at Madrona Lakes Golf
Course, 100-85.
The Lady Highclimbers also lost
on Thursday to Bellarmine Prepara-
tory School, 148-71, at Bayshore Golf
