As the members of
Creedence Clearwater Re-
vival ask, "Who'll stop the
rain?"
It's May and spring
sports are quickly com-
ing to an end as the WIAA
state tournaments all take
place between May 24 and
May 28.
But Mother Nature
doesn't seem to be a huge
sports fan. Teams through-
out the entire western half
of Washington are dealing
with r0in-outs and cancel-
ations.
Obviously, this is not too
much of a problem in the
fall and winter since the
games are either indoors
or the weather makes the
games more interesting
(i.e. soccer).
But there might have to
be some changes to spring
sports here in the Pacific
Northwest. For example,
why not build indoor facili-
ties?
The ideal model would
be a multi-sport facil-
ity that could hold football,
baseball, softball, track
and field, tennis and sgccer
games while all indoor ath-
have the funds.
But here is an idea that
was brought to my atten-
tion that could work - cen-
tral locations for area high
schools.
In Lacey, the South
Sound Stadium located
next to North Thurston
High School and hosts
home games for several
area high schools - North
Thurston, Timberline, Riv-
er Ridge and South Sound.
What would stop some
kind of roofing if all of the
high schools combined to
help fund the construc-
tions? It may take several
years to raise the money,
but why not?
As for other areas, the
numerous high schools in
Tacoma (i.e. Mount Taho-
ma, Lincoln, Stadium and
Foss) can work together
easily.
The Kitsap area schools
(Bremerton, Olympic,
Klahowya, North Kitsap,
South Kitsap, Central Kit-
sap, etc.) could work to-
gether as well.
For this area, Mason
County schools (Shelton,
North Mason and Mary
M. Knight), along with the
Olympia schools, could at-
tempt to build a central
location that could accom-
date everyone.
The one factor could be
scheduling. How can we fit
so many games at once?
My solution would be
possibly having more week-
end games. What's better
than a Saturday afternoon
or evening football game?
