The multi-purpose room is the only facility in our school district large enough to accommodate a district-wide meeting. Through the years it has served as a central meeting place for all kinds of functions. We've had a lot of work parties for such things as repairing the roof, installing the insulation and paneling on the interior of the multi-purpose room, working on the grounds, etc. We've had some excellent programs presented there by the children, with room for the parents and others to observe. It has also been used for community games, P.T.O. fund-raising, dinners, etc. At these gatherings we've enjoyed a few minutes of friendly conversation with our neighbors and kept the community spirit alive. The citizens have always been proud and supportive of the school. If we do not support the levy on May 20, the school we've proudly worked to build and exception of music and band. (And the amount for these have been cut in half for next year.) And the small amount they will cost would not even be a drop in the bucket towards paying the new bill to Shelton, even if they don't pass any of their levy. Past expenditures are hardly relevant; there are no frills in next year's budget. Come next year four Pioneer employees will be joining the unemployment lines due to cuts recommended by the levy committee.., even if a levy is passed. How can anyone feel that an 8% allowance for expenses (gas, oil, fuel, electricity, food, etc.) is wrong in light of the present 12% inflation? As far as I know, schools are not immune to inflation! If you plan to vote no just to save paying additional taxes, you are taking a mighty big gamble. Before you vote, be sure you can afford that gamble. For without a state-approved budget, consolidation will become a reality, not just a threat. And if you think that route will cost you less, you'd best check the facts for yourself; instead of taking some other guy's word for gospel! Am 1 voting yes? You bet your sweet bippy 1 am! I for one can't afford the gamble on a no vote! Carmen Yates Harstine Island P.S. Since this year will mark my last tbr having any kids at Pioneer, I feel that I can be as objective as any taxpayer on this issue. I don't want more taxes any more than the next guy; 1 sincerely believe supporting Pioneer will cost me the least of the two choices available. maintain will surely become a part of Shelton District 309. We will have lost local control of the management of our school. We cannot be sure the facility will even be kept open. However we can be sure we will be paying more taxes and we will have a lot less say about how these tax monies are used. I personally dislike paying taxes for expenditures which I do not approve (such as contributing toward the 73 million for Thieu to retire on). If we could divert some of these monies to schools we wouldn't need to ask for special levies. Unfortunately, this does not happen. However, we surely want to provide the best possible educational environment for every child to learn to be a responsible citizen. Pioneer School does provide such an environment. Support of the levy will keep it that way. If Pioneer School has a program which we feel is not a wise use of tax dollars, we can attend school board meetings, express opinions, and make suggestions for change. I believe if we are part of 309 our input will be less effective. I have lived in this district 23 years. I have long felt one reason Pioneer District has so few delinquency problems is because the parents and others have always taken an active interest in the school and in the kids' welfare, and the kids have known people cared. I am certain the citizens of Pioneer want to keep it that way. Supporting the levy on May 20 and keeping our school district intact seems the wisest and most economical choice. In conclusion, I'd like each voter to ask these questions: What is our responsibility to today's youth? Did anyone question our right to the best educational opportunity? Who paid the bill for our education? I think we must provide the best educational programs to insure the success fo[ today's youth. If we fail to do so, we will have failed the kids.
