0 For the sixth consecutive year, Shclton High School's track team has brought home all the marbles in Black Hills League competition. Friday night at Highclimber Stadium, in what was billed as the BHUs meet to decide the '75 champs, Bill Brickert's forces erased any doubt as to whom the '75 powerhouse of BHL track and field was, defehting a hustling Hoquiam squad 89½-55½. Rob Smith, the heavily-recruited football and DAN JOHNSON beats his brother, Dave, by 3/10 of a second to win the mile during Shelton's meet with Hoquiam Friday evening. His winning time was 4:38.4. Smith's performance must have pumped up the Highclimber runners. Gary Nelson, usually • Brickert's 220, 440 and relay man, took the 100 in 10.4. Dan Johnson, the injured half of the twin distance act, beat brother Dave in the mile by three-tenths of a second, winning at 4:38.4. Paul Mortensen was pushed all the way to the 440 tape by Hoquiam's Steve Bitar, with Mortensen getting home in 51.4. Bitar was right there at 51.5. Del Miller, the flu-ridden Climber javelin thrower, took a first at 164'0". Jeff Pill, also on the Highclimber crippled list, put the shot 50'½" to keep Shelton's victory march on its way. Smith again stepped in to h',dt the Climber push, this time with a 19'11½" effort in the long jump. Tile Climbers then nailed down three firsts in succession to remain unbeaten in BHL circles. Dave Johnsofi's 10:07.6 two-mile, Doug Kingery's l l-foot pole By LARRY WILUAMS The Shelton High School track squad may want to add another state AA championship to the northside school's athletic ~reen, Clark, Volkman, Smith) .8. Judging by Saturday's Tumwater Invitational victory, at the Tumwater oval, the Highclimbers have a chance at it. Bill Brickert's thinclads put away five other BHL foes to establish themselves as the team to beat from this area. If distance coach Leon Stutzman and weight coach Walt Clayton's prediction is correct, Dan Johnson, Jeff Pill and Del Miller should be healthy for the state meet this year in Pullman May 23 and 24. Joe Schab, the junior hurdler, took the highs in 16.9 and doubled up in the lows, wimdng in 2t.8. Pill, coming off a knee injury, put the shot 53'1½" to pick up ten points. Marty Settle whipped the field in the 220, winning at 24.1. Joe McPhearson, Chehalis' outstanding miler, ran away from North Thurston's Larry Webber and Shelton's Dave Johnson, winning in 4:26 flat. This could be an outstanding race at Pullman. Webber has hit 4:24.8 and Johnson has run a 4:26.5. if Dan Johnson is healthy, there could be four BHL runners making a side-by-side run for the tape at Pullman. Brickert predicted at the first of the year that his 440 and mile relay teams could spring some surprises by season's end. The mile relay team could sport a new face, that of Dave Johnson. It has been rumored that Johnson is hitting under 52.0 in practice. If so, then the 3:32.5 clocking at Tumwater last week Martin (S). could drop considerably.
