Railroad venue, Shelton 426-6143 16904 'Rough weekend' for Dragonfest By NATALIE JOHNSON natalie@masoncounty.com The first ever Dragon- fest took over the Sander- son Field Events Center and Fairground on the third weekend in April and drew some adventurous locals and tourists out into the sun. '%Ve counted 900 people, 400 of them were children," said event organizer Rachel Hansen. "It was a beautiful weekend but a rough week- end. I think ff you throw an event that has never hap- pened before it's hard to get people to know about it." Dragonfest, an event Han- sen envisioned as a combined Earth Day, St. George's Day and general spring-themed fundraiser for the fair strug- gled to fill the fairgrounds over the weekend. The event had 24 vendors, including three food vendors and a beer garden. To raise awareness for the Mason Area Fair, many fair departments showed up to perform demonstrations or provide activities for children at the event. "Kids had a really good time with it and the older people had a good time too," Hansen said. There were also 62 per- formers at the event includ- ing a fire-dancing group called Dragon Steps. "The Dragon Steps were there all weekend they had 25 performers and they were doing all sorts of things," Hansen said. The festival also included paper lantern building work- shops and a lantern parade. "We had a huge influx of people building lanterns on Saturday afternoon," Hansen said. "They went through the parade and there were prob- ably 200 or 300 people." While only 900 people at- tended the event, Hansen said the average festival-goer spent four to six hours there. Many of them also came from outside Mason County to at- tend the event. "We had a lot of people from Olympia but not a lot of people from Shelton," she said. Rachel and John Hanson, of Northwest Event Orga- nizers, signed a lease for the fairgrounds with the Port of Shelton early this year. The Federal Aviation Ad- ministration (FAA) has ruled that the port must revert the land the fairgrounds sits on, which is next to its main run- way, to airport use b: Decem- ber 2013. Hansen said they are trying to renew awareness of and interest in the fair- grounds before then. "Unless somebody actually steps up and does something with what we have now, there isn't going to be a reason to have a fairgrounds," she said. "Tigris really is a fun place to go, we need to have activities going so people know that it's open." In addition to regular events that happen at the fair- grounds, like the Mason Area Fair and OysterFest, Hansen said Northwest Event Or- ganizers plans to have more events at the location. "It's important that we have a gathering place," Hansen said. '%Ve need sup- port from the community."
