evens gwes back to the community, the Harst-
ine Island Community Club and our historic
hall in double measure. Keep up the good
work. Folks looking for more plants can find
them at the Saturday Market which will open
the next week on June 2.
The May Women's Club meeting turned
into a May "Mardi Gras" luncheon. Sandy
Murphy took the lead of this year's event and
chaired the presentation. She was helped
by she decorating committee: BJ Beauchene,
Patti Chapman, Ginny Briesmeister, Shirley
Shanley, Carolyn Allison and Carol Bush.
The hall was decorated like it could have been
in New Orleans with lots of color! The ladies
dressed in gaudy fashion for the event and
were treated to beads and fancy masks at
the door as they arrived. The food committee
served Muffuletta Pinwheels, New Orleans
Cheese Ball and Mardi Gras Shrimp Dip &
crackers for an appetizer. The women enjoyed
a filling lunch of celebration orange Jell-O sal-
ad, Louisiana garden salad with pecans and
king's rolls, jambalaya with chicken, shrimp
and andouille sausage. The meal was topped
off with blueberry bread pudding with rum
Sauce for dessert. The cooks out did them-
selves. The cooks were mentored by Margaret
Laughlin and included Sharon Zeeben as lead
with a great deal of help from, Joye Robinson,
Carol Bush, Margie Plebuch, Sandy Kramer
and Joan Prastka. Others who helped were,
Pat LeClair. Allison Main, Pat Remine, Judie
Schaaf, and Jenell Lyskoski. Clean up is a big
part of a luncheon of this size and we would
like to thank those who helped in this depart-
ment, Billie Fish. Allison Main, Bobbi Conhy,
and Mary Nichols. It takes many people to
bring this annual event to the ladies of the
Women's Club and a thank you is extended to
all who gave of their time and talent to bring
"Mardi Gras" to Harstine Island this year.
Harstine Island Community Choir is ready
to present their eighth armual spring con-
cert, Touch of Fire, May 18, 19 and 20. Fire
creates, refines, destroys and renews. Fire
provides light, warmth, protection, and pain.
Fire is a lover's passion and fire is the scion of
hate. The ethereal, ever-changing dance of the
flame hypnotizes, luring you in.
The wide-ranging selection of music leads
you from the flickering first lights of Bobrow-
itz and Porter's The Creation (A Rock Can-
tatal, to bask in the splendor, warmth and
glory of Joseph Haydn's Missa Sancti Nicolai,
and finally to the hope of renewal in a set of
American spirituals that triumph over the
ashes of despair.
Join them for this unique and diverse mu-
sical performance at 7 p.i. May 18 at United
Methodist Church in Shelton, at 3 pm May
19 at St Hugh's Episcopal Church in Allyn, or
at 3 p.m. May 20 at the Choir's home venue,
Harstine Island Community Hall, for a stir-
ring concert of two centuries of choral music.
One of the chois goals is to make music
available to every interested person regard-
less of financial circumstances. Therefore, per-
formances as well as membership are "donate
as able."
And, of course, the choir always welcomes
new members no matter what their skill level
or experience, so if you want to start singing
our stories with us instead of just listening,
we would love to have you. For questions or
more information, contact the choir's artistic
director, Elizabeth Berndt t 432-9940), or visit
us in the web at www.harstinechoir.org.
The next big island eating event will take
place May 26 that event is the annual Com-
munity Club Spaghetti Dinner. Volunteers
get all dressed up in a traditional Italian garb
to serve you delicious spaghetti until you are
stuffed and can't eat any more. Then, the
grange club will offer you some homemade
desserts that are scrumptious and irresistible
and you will eat even more. This family event
will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. And the cost is
only $6 for adults and $3 for children. There
is nowhere where you can eat so much and so
inexpensively. So, bring your appetite and join
the fun of this annual dinner.
And one more eating tip senior lunch
will be serving up an extra special lunch on
May 16th. They will be offering a Thanksgiv-
ing dinner of roasted turkey with mashed
potatoes and dressing covered in rich, creamy
gravy. Along with that there will be cranber-
ry sauce, green beans, bread pudding topped
with whipped cream.
I'll tell you, with what we grow and what
we cook on this island we certainly eat
well.
Reminder of two more islandevents. Don't
forget May 26, 27, 28 there will be a free
tour of local artists and their studios. Artists
Kathy Ross. John Benn, Colleen Gallagher,
Bob Bonnett and Jann Bonnett founded this
new event in order to offer an unusual oppor-
tunity to visit the home studios of the artists.
Tour participants will see works in progress,
raw materials, tools, and the environment
that inspires these creative people. Guests
will meet the artists, discuss their work, and
learn about influences affecting the design of
each piece.
