The Shelton baseball
team ended its season on
a high note two weeks ago.
On April 27, the High-
climbers (3-14) defeated
Mt. Tahoma 12-2.
"We played an awesome
game," SHS head baseball
coach Erik Engstrom said.
"It was a good way to end
the season."
Senior Joe Strand
pitched for
the High-
climbers
with five
strikeouts
and three
hits.
Strand
hit 2-3, se-
nior Cur-
Joe tis Wuest-
Strand ner hit
3-4, senior
Colton
Twiddy hit 2-3 and senior
Jake Enslow hit 1-1.
This was the third victo-
ry for the team this season
and the second time Shel-
don defeated Mt. Tahoma.
Engstrom said the team
improved and progressed
throughout the season, de-
spite its record.
"Even with the difficul-
ties of playing high-caliber
teams, the guys stayed
positive and played all the
way through," Engstrom
said.
The team's banquet has
not yet been scheduled.
Kent shuts out Shelton boys' rugby 15s
By EMILY HANSON
emily@masoneounty.com.
The Shelton boys' rugby team struggled
last weekend.
On Saturday, Kent shut out the boys 58-
0.
"At the end of the first half against
Kent, they were already up 40-0," Shelton
co-head coach Chris Nesmith said. "It took
the first half for the Shelton team to find
their bearings and get coordinated. Many
of the boys are not used to the positions
they were playing."
He said that in the second half of the
game, Shelton was in scoring position in
the Kent zone.
"As the boys remained calm, the game
wen in our favor," Nesmith said. "The
closer to scoring we got, the more distract-
ed the boys were and the more their old
bad habits emerged."
Two young players stood out as leaders
for the team, he said.
"Freshman Brian Nault was voted Man
of the Match on Saturday but I was even
more impressed how he stepped out as a
leader on the field," Nesmith said.
Freshman Jordan Kaiser helped lead
the eam at fly-half, Nesmith said.
"Jordan sepped up as a leader on the
field to make many key offensive deci-
sions," Nesmith said.
The Shelton boys' rugby 15s team {2-3-
1) has had huge growth this season, Ne-
smith said.
"As another non-league match, I used
the opportunity o provide our younger
side with opportunity on the field," he said.
"The boys made huge improvements as
the game progressed garnering confidence
and skills. Additionally, Kent is the No. 1
ranked team in the north devasion. Play-
ing a second side match against the top
ranked north league team makes the end-
ing score easily predictable. What isn't as
easy to predict is how much the Shelton
team grew."
The boys' team's final league match
is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday against
Rainier at Oakland Bay Junior High.
"Geographically, this is a very large
program, drawing athletes from Auburn,
Puyallup, Sumner and Buckley," Nesmith
said. "We play a very different style of
game so I expect the matchup to be very
entertaining."
Nesmith said .the team has focused on
high-stress decision making during prac-
tice this week to enable the boys to stay
calm during their upcoming match.
"We hope o see the positive effects this
week," he added.
