Shelton hosting lea
By EMILY HANSON
The Shelton track and field team is host-
ing the 4A Narrows League Championships
this week.
Today and Saturday, all eight 4A Nar-
rows League teams will converge at High-
climber Field for the final league meet of
the season before districts.
"This is a great honor for the program to
be able to host a meet like this," SHS head
track and field coach Doug Sells said. "We
are looking to provide the quality officiating
and accommodations that we work so hard
to provide at the Shelton Invitational."
He said Shelton has some real talent
that will be showcased at the meet.
"Some people to watch would be Roman
Hurst in the triple jump, Bryton Rodgers in
the pole vault, Indi Endicott in the hurdles,
pole vault and high jump, Lolly Jones in the
throws, Courtney Hansen in the javelin,
Nathan Morgan and Cody Williamson in
the middle distances, our girls' spring relay
teams and just about every Shelton athlete
who qualified," Sells said.
Qualified athletes for the league meet
are in the top 16 for each track and field
event.
"The top four finishers in each event will
move on to districts next weekend at Mt.
Tahoma," Sells said. "We are all really ex-
cited."
Last week, the Highclimbers partici-
ue meet Saturday
in the last two regular invites of the
Jason. :On Friday, the varsity athletes
eted at the 48th annual Shaner In-
in Tumwater. At this invite, the
helton boys' team tied fourth place among
2 teams with 58 points and the girls' team
ook 10th place out of 12 teams with 31.5
,oints,
"The team had a great night at the Sha-
Ler Im;ite," Sells said. "It's always a great
aeet to attend. Everyone is relaxed from
ast finishing up the Shelton Invite the
reek before and the kids really enjoy this
w-pressure meet where we always get a
t of personal records."
Sells said this was an outstanding meet
r all of the Highclimbers.
"I think everyone came away from that
night with a huge smile," he said.
On Saturday, the freshman Highclimb-
ers competed at the Centralia Freshman
Invitational at Tiger Stadium.
"The Freshman Invite was so much fun
for everyone," Sells said. "This is always a
great meet for the ninth-graders because
they don't have to worry about any heavy
competition from upperclassmen. It's their
time to shine."
He said all of the freshmen competed
well at the invite.
"For a lot of them, it was the last meet of
the year so I was really glad to seem end on
a positive note," Sells said.
The 4A Narrows League Championships
begins at 3:30 p.m. today and continue at
noon on Saturday.

The Mary M. Knight
track team competed in its
last regular season meet
last week.
On May 3, the Knight
Owls traveled to South
Bend where the girls' team
took sixth out of seven
teams with 18 points and
the boys' team took seventh
out of eight teams with 26

"At last week's meet in
South Bend, we had anotl-
er good day of competition,"
MMK head track and field
coach Kitty Brehmeyer
said.
Sophomore Hannah
Frost and junior Nick Di-
erkop continued to shine
for the Knight Owls. Frost
earned personal records in
the 800 and discus while
Dierkop earned a personal
record in the high jump.
"It is always great to
see athletes continue to
improve as the season pro-
gresses," Brehmeyer said.
"We are all working toward
personal improvements for
the district meet."
The Knight Owls have
time to relax and practice
before they compete at the
district meet.
The 1B District 4 Cham-
pionship is scheduled to be-
gin at 3:45 p.m. on May 18

while Villanueva scored 14.'
.Martinson said the team is now
focused on the 4A Narrows League
Championship, which was scheduled
to conclude yesterday at Lake Span-
away Golf Course.
At that tournament, four Shelton
golfers -- Ernst, Villanueva, Lindsey
Norton and Kerry Johnson -- were ex-
pected to compete.
Prior to the start of the Narrows
League Championship, Martinson
said the group of four golfers would be
a good mix of veteran and young play-
ers.
"Our goal is to get as many through
to the second day -- half the field
qualifies for the second round -- of
the league tournament," Martinson

Ernst qualified for the district meet
last year and missed competing at

"I am looking for her leadership in
this year's league tournament," Mar-

Incorrect information was includ-
ed in last week's article "Athletes'
academic requirements lowered."
The article stated that any student
could fail one class per semester and
still graduate. This would only give
the student 20 credits which are
not enough to graduate, as 22 crect-
its are required. Also, the new aca-
demic standards apply to students
involved in all school activities, not
just sports. The Journal regrets the
error.
