family members. A staging area could
be set up in the Oakland Bay Junior
High School parking lot, she said.
Five of the six valedictorians have
submitted speeches that will be
recorded and played during the cer-
emony, tentatively set for 10 am. to 5
p.m. June 23.
But those plans might change if
Mason County is allowed to move into ..
phase three of Gov. Jay Inslee’s four-
phase plan for reopening. The Board
of Mason County Commissioners. on
Monday announced they are applying
to the state to be allowed to move into
phase three, which allows the reopen-
ing of libraries and museums, gather-
ings up to 50 people, 50% capacity at
recreational facilities and movie the-
aters, and 75% capacity at restaurants.
During the regular Shelton School
Board meeting conducted Tuesday
evening via Zoom, district officials,
board members and two graduates
talked about the possibility of a more
traditional ceremony that could be
conducted on the field at Oakland Bay
Junior High School. '
Graduates would stand 6 feet apart,
and members of the audience would
also practice social distancing. said
Maryann Marshall, the district’s ex-
ecutive director of instructional pro-
grams.

called the proposal “a great idea.”
“This is Plan B,” he said. “Plan A is
the drive-through graduation un-
less things change dramatically.”
District officials were scheduled
to talk about the proposal Wednes-
day evening, after the Shelton-Mason
County Journal went to press.
The CHOICE High School Class of
2020 will celebrate commencement on
Sept. 18 inside Shelton High School’s
Performing Arts Center. The ceremony .
. will be livenryirtual, dependingnnthe
conditions of the pandemic.
The Shelton High School Class of
2020 Boosters have organized a car
parade to celebrate the graduates On
Tuesday. The seniors will meet at 2
p.m. in the parking lot at the former
Olsen Furniture Store, 414 W. Frank-
lin St.. They 'will form a line of deco-
rated cars, drive down Fourth Street
to West Railroad Avenue to Seventh
Street, up Olympic Highway North,
along East Wallace Kneeland Boule-
vard, down Shelton Springs Road and
end at Shelton High School.
When the students arrive at the
high school, they will drive though
the parking lot, where teachers and
staff will line up along the sidewalks
to wave to the graduates. The Shelton
School District is not sponsoring the
event, but gave the organizers permis-
sion to be on campus.
Everyone is invited to show‘their
support by cheering, holding signs and
honking, while practicing social dis-
tancing.

Renewals required for county tax' reduction

Mason County residents who re-
ceive a reduction of taxes through the
Senior Citizen/Disabled Persons Pro-
gram cannot continue to be eligible
for the program unless they submit a
renewal application for exemption at
least once every six years, or upon the
county assessor’s request.
Renewal applications for Areas 3
and 6 were mailed out May 22, the
county stated in a news release. Com-
pleted renewal applications must be
returned by July 1.
Renewal applications can be sub—
mitted either by mail, email, fax, the
drop box outside the county assessor’s
building or by appointment. For more
