Children should be our top priority - stop the cuts to Editor, the Journal We, the teachers in the Shelton School District are very concerned about the proposed cuts to education that are currently being proposed in both the House and the Senate. We are well aware that in tough eco- nomic times everyone must do some belt-tightening, but ,slashing programs, that seree~ our children:.is, not~ :: the answer. Such cuts are harmful for the short term and set a very troubling precedent for the future. How we as a state (and a nation) choose to spend our resources should reflect our priorities. Children should be a top priority for our support and attention, not an afterthought in funding proposals. We recognize that we must address our state's se- rious fiscal challenges, but we do not believe cutting core education programs is the right approach. Wash- ington's classes are the third most crowded in the United States, yet both the House and Senate budget proposals would eliminate the voter-approved 1-728 funding that guarantees smaller class sizes for Kin- dergarten through fourth grades. Cutting spending for children will not only hurt kids, it will hurt our economy. Research clearly demonstrates that invest- ments in education help grow the economy.
