HIGH SPOTLIGHT
Shelton Kiwanis announces
2011-12 scholarship winners
For over twenty years, the Shelton Kiwanis has
provided educational scholarships to students in
their service area. This year, the Shelton Kiwan-
is Foundation will be adding a very special new
scholarship, the Dell Abelein Endowment Fund.
This scholarship will be self-financing and will go
exclusively to those working towards a career in
education. The scholarship is named in memoriam
of Dell Abelein, a 20-year member of Shelton Ki-
wanis as well as a teacher who served our commu-
nity for 30 years. After his passing on November
30, 2010, the Shelton Kiwanis was surprised to
learn that he had left a substantial endowraent to
serve as a source for educational scholarships.
Therefore, the Shelton Kiwanis is proud to an-
nounce the first Dell Abelein Endowment Scholar-
ships. Brianna Barkley and Devin Marie Eliason
will be the very first $1,000 Abelein Scholarships.
Additionally, the Shelton Kiwanis Foundation will
be awarding four $1,000 scholarships to Megan K.
Brennan, Haley Field, Jessica Foster and Kathryn
Meyers.

Religious student to
study psychology,
minor in photography
By DEAN SIEMON
Shelton High School se-
hior Kristy Coughlin is a
two-sport athlete that is set
to major in psychology at
Brigham Young University -
Idaho.
To escape from all the
stress, Coughiin enjoys
painting, which she began
last year. '~here's something
that's so relaxing," she said.
But whether she uses pas-
tels or acrylic paint, there
will always be a mess af-
terwards. "I usually end up
with a couple of smudges on
my face, especially when I'm
painting a face," Coughlin
said.
Coughlin said she chose
to major in psychology after
taking courses at Shelton
High School with teacher
Nick Elmquist, along with
sociology classes. "It's a very
interesting class," she said.
"There's almost no way to get
bored."
While she is sure she will
earn an associates degree at
least with a goal for a bach-
elors degree, the chance of
further studies is pending.
"Depending on how I do
and my interest continues, I
would like to get a masters
[degree]," Coughlin said.
Coughlin said she is in-
terested in pursuing a minor
in photography, occasionally
taking still photos of nature.
"It's s~.nethmg that I'm good
at," she said. "I'm think it's
more talent to the photogra-
pher if they capture the too-
meat."
The Shelton senior chose
to accept her admission to
BYU-Idaho for the school's
atmosphere, which abides
by her religious guidelines
Kristy Coughlin
set by the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Coughlin said she was
born and raised in the church
through morn and dad, Carol
and David Coughlin, with
sisters Jaime and Kathleen.
"It's a more religious based
school," she said. "There
won't be any drinking or frat
parties."
While holding a grade
point average above 3.5,
Coughlin has been a stu-
dent-athlete at Shelton High
School for three years in
track and field (spring) and
volleyball (fall).
Track and field is her fa-
vorite for the individual as-
pect, with a focus on earning
personal records. "It's more
like you're competing against
yourself and then the other
athletes," she said.
While succeeding in
long jump and triple jump,
Coughlin said her new favor-
ite event is hurdles, which
she ran one race this season.
"Just the exhileration of the
gun going off," she said. "Run
as fast as you can and don't
fall on your :face."
