The name was changed to Mason County by the Territorial Legislature in 1864. The name Mason being in honor of C. "vV. Mason who was secretary to the first Territorial Governor. The first County seat was at Oakland on the Morrow Donation Claim, one and one half miles north of Shelton but was moved to Shelton where a frame Court House was built in 1888 on lands donated by David Shelton, The frame building was removed and the present sandstone build- ing was erected in 1929. Mason County i situated at the south end of Puget Sound and has an area of 930 square miles: Population of 15.022 (1950} and a taxable valuation of $18,792,332. The principal industry is logging and the manufacture of wood products. The timber lying near tide. water has long since been removed and each year sees operations move farther back into the O1ympto moun- tains and foothills. The Simpson Logging Company has operated here eontinuomdy since. 189.5. All locomotive in operation are now diesel and the tracl¢ rm 18 miles west from Shelton. Four mflls are in operation in Shelton. Two saw mills, a plywoo plant and a woodfiber insulation board plant. As the timber is removed the re-forestation proretmes, thtm in- suring a continuous yield of timber .or use in coming generaUonS. Christmas tree farming is very profitalle and Maon County h become knownas the "Christmas Tree Capital of the World." In the SkokomiSh and Kamilche valleys are large dairy fatn Mason CounD" is a sportsmen's paradise having over 100 lakes, the southern sweep of Hood Canal and the southern tip of Puget Soun with all its bays and inlets. Many miles of waterfront property which Is being rapidly developed and settled. Boating, fishing, and wate 'skiing making it indeed a vacation attraction, We also have the wonderful and beautiful Olympic mountains for those who enjoy trecking to the hills and climbing to the hlhe peaks. Twanoh and Belfair State Parks are located on Hood Canal. There are access parks on many of the lakes where boats may be landed and picnic facilities have been installed by the State Game Department. The Lake Cushman dam supplies power to the City of Tacoma and there is also a park area on Lake Cmrhman. This report is prepared annually and shows a complete report county finances. Tables and exhibits pertaining to every taxing d' trict are shown in detail. The name was changed to Mason County by the Territorial Legislature in 1864. The name Mason being in honor of C. "vV. Mason who was secretary to the first Territorial Governor. The first County seat was at Oakland on the Morrow Donation Claim, one and one half miles north of Shelton but was moved to Shelton where a frame Court House was built in 1888 on lands donated by David Shelton, The frame building was removed and the present sandstone build- ing was erected in 1929. Mason County i situated at the south end of Puget Sound and has an area of 930 square miles: Population of 15.022 (1950} and a taxable valuation of $18,792,332. The principal industry is logging and the manufacture of wood products. The timber lying near tide. water has long since been removed and each year sees operations move farther back into the O1ympto moun- tains and foothills. The Simpson Logging Company has operated here eontinuomdy since. 189.5. All locomotive in operation are now diesel and the tracl¢ rm 18 miles west from Shelton. Four mflls are in operation in Shelton. Two saw mills, a plywoo plant and a woodfiber insulation board plant. As the timber is removed the re-forestation proretmes, thtm in- suring a continuous yield of timber .or use in coming generaUonS. Christmas tree farming is very profitalle and Maon County h become knownas the "Christmas Tree Capital of the World." In the SkokomiSh and Kamilche valleys are large dairy fatn Mason CounD" is a sportsmen's paradise having over 100 lakes, the southern sweep of Hood Canal and the southern tip of Puget Soun with all its bays and inlets. Many miles of waterfront property which Is being rapidly developed and settled. Boating, fishing, and wate 'skiing making it indeed a vacation attraction, We also have the wonderful and beautiful Olympic mountains for those who enjoy trecking to the hills and climbing to the hlhe peaks. Twanoh and Belfair State Parks are located on Hood Canal. There are access parks on many of the lakes where boats may be landed and picnic facilities have been installed by the State Game Department. The Lake Cushman dam supplies power to the City of Tacoma and there is also a park area on Lake Cmrhman. This report is prepared annually and shows a complete report county finances.
