Eight runs in the top of the
seventh inning for Shelton Junior
High's Blazers put them ahead
1 2-1 in their game with Reeves of
Olympia last week and the score
remained 12-1 as the Blazers won
their sixth game in seven starts.
Doug Long and Ray
K ampols both had homers for
the Blazers. Coach Harlen
Buitenveld commented that the
left field fence was a very short
fly away from home. The first
batter ot the first inning hit a
home run for Reeves off Terry
Knight. No other runs scored off
the righthand ace for the rest of
the game. Knight and Krumpols
are the main reasons for the
Blazers' success, if it isn't their
Shelton Junior ttigh losing a
subdistrict meet? No!
It happened last Thursday at
Jefferson Junior High when the
Blazers lost to Washington by 11
points, despite the Blazers' C
class 1 1 1 V2 points. It was the first
subdistrict lost by Shelton in the
past several years.
The little guys won five of
nine events for the Blazers in the
C class, and took three more
thirds, but no wins in the A class
and only one in the B class
resulted in not enough points for
a Blazer win.
Two records were set by
Blazers. Bob Davis and Jim Hillier
both went 5'3'/2" in the B class
high jump to break that record,
and Davis won the event on fewer
misses. In the C class. Mark Lewis
won the pole vault with a new
subdistrict record of 9'9". Lewis
also ran in the winning relay team
and got a third in the 50, an event
he won consistently during the
season. He pulled a muscle in that
race, but is expected to be ready
to go in this Thursday's district
meet at Jefferson.
In the A class, Brian Grinnell
qualified for the district meet by
placing third in the low hurdles
and fourth in the high hurdles
behind a record breaking
performance by Molinero of
Hood Canal.
Steve Settle was the highest
placer in the A class, with a
second in the 180. ttarvey Krise
will go to district in the pole vault
because of his third in the meet.
Matt Eash placed third in the 330,
and Brad Oling was third in the
shot. Gene Rank was fourth in
the pole vault. Only the first four
places in subdistrict will go to
district.
Bob Davis got into district in
three events. As well as setting a
record in the high jump, he was
second in the 180 and third in the

100. Marty Settle was second in
the 50 in the B class. Lyle Oling
was third in the B shot put. Steve
Savage was fourth in the 440 and
Steve Baze was fourth in the high
jump that Shelton dominated.
Steve Hoosier, Charlie Earl,
Mark Lewis, and Fred Riske were
the group of C class members that
pulled off the 111 points. Hoosier
was first in the high jump, and
second in the pole vault. Earl was
first in the long jump, and second
in the low hurdles. Lewis' feats
have already been mentioned.
Riske was second in the long
jump, which the Blazers took the
first three places in with Charlie
Earl's brother, Warren, taking
third. Steve Fox got a third in the
75, Baze was third in the high
jump, and Boelke was third in the
shot. Lewis, Riske, and the two
Earls make up the winning relay
team in the C class.
The final point totals were
Washington 242, Shelton 231,

The hosts took the lead on
their home run in the first, and
were leading 14) until the third
inning when the Blazers tied it up.
Krumpols hit his home run, the
only base hit of the inning, with
no one on base to make the score
1-1.
Then in the fourth, Sonny
Vercher hit a single and was
helped in to score by an error and
a fielder's choice. Shelton got two
more in the fifth, when Terry
Knight was on an error, and Doug
Long singled. Both scored when
Reeves made another error
following Ted Schonkwiler's
sacrifice that advanced both
runners a base.
The sixth was uneventful, but
the seventh was yet to come, and
a wild one it was. Doug Long,
who started it off with a walk, got
up again in the same inning when
the Blazers went through the
batting order, and hit a home run.
The Reeves pitcher walked three
batters after Long, and Long was
forced in on the walks. More runs
came in until Long made his way
to the plate once again, when he
hit a three run homer, with two
men on.
Krumpols and Long were the
hottest at the plate for Shelton.
They each had a homer, and
Terry Knight was the only other
Blazer to get a hit besides them.
Long was two for four and
Krumpols two for five.
Shelton had one game left at
this writing. So far this year in
varsity coaching, Buitenveld has a
1 1-2 record in football and
baseball. His gridders lost one
game in six, and the diamondmen
are enjoying the same success
under his coaching.

and must play JFK again, this

The two top golfers of the
Climbers' squad, junior Bob
Turner and sophomore Rich
Walker, were members of that
Shelton hoop squad that lost to
Kennedy in two overtimes. They
will be out to prove that they are
superior on the links. Another
basket ball man that would like to
get a shot at Kennedy is Mike
Sparks, who is not on the top five
of Shelton's golf team, but is
competing for that fifth spot.
Sparks, a senior, was the
Climbers' top scorer and dumped
in a shot with a few seconds on
the clock to send that game into
overtime.
Shelton finished second in
league by topping Port Angeles on
the Roughriders' home course up
north, on Monday.
Rich Walker had the best
score of all golfers, with a 74 and
32 points. He was playing in the
number two spot. Bob Turner
followed him with a 75 and 31
points from the number one
132-127 in the Climbers' favor.

Steve Bostrom shot an 84 and had

Shelton won its league match
with North Kitsap last Tuesday
103-86 playing with their second
five players.
Jack Stentz played the
number one position, shooting an
89 for 17 points. Jerry Munro was
the number two man, and he
came in with the best score of the
day, a 78, for 28 big points.
Clyde Rains was in the fourth
slot, and he was only a stroke and
a point away from Munro.
Bob Christey played number
three and had an 87 with 19
points. The last man was Jim
Kneeland who shot a 94 for 12
points.
Every one of the Climbers
won individual matches except
Kneeland. Stentz won by four
strokes, Munro by ten, Christey
by four, Rains by 11, and
Kneeland lost by five.
The powerful Climbers, who
finished the league season with a
6-1 record, are coached by Andy
Tuson. Better than winning their
easier meets with their second five
is the fact that only one of their
top five is a senior, and or.ly two
of their second five are seniors.
Two of the top five are
sophomores, and one of those is
competing for the top spot on the
team. Two more of the second
five are sophs. A well balanced
and powerful team is in the
crystal ball for the Climbers in the
future.
By finishing second in the
league, they now have to play off
with John F. Kennedy for the
right to go to state in Everett on
May 22.

No tank is used by the
23-year old aquaman. In the
competition, he dives from 40 to
80 feet, and stays down as long as
two minutes.
This takes training and
conditioning. He has to spend one
of every three days in the salt
water-all day. In the recent meet,
he was in the salt water five hours
at a time. The state championship
was held over two weekends, for a
total of four days' competition.
Renny has been in the sport
since 1964, when he started
largely due to the mystique of sea

competition, which saw Renny
bring Shelton one of its few state
championships-spearing fish.
